The Narrows (Black Women Writers Series) Paperback – January 1, 1988

4.4 4.4 out of 5 stars 128 ratings

When Link Williams, a college-educated twenty-six-year-old African-American man, falls for Camilo Sheffield, a wealthy married white woman, things will never be the same in the sleepy New England town of Monmouth, Connecticut. Set in the 1950s, this unforgettable classic deftly evokes a tragic love affair and offers a window onto the powerful ways in which class, race, and love intersected in midcentury America.

When I finished this book, I felt as if I had an experience way beyond "just" reading a book. It lingers. It affected me on so many levels. Read this book. You won't be sorry.

Good book about race, love and mistakes. The writing is a bit hard to read but once you get into the book, it flows. At first, I was a little turned off by the writing, but as I read more, they style made perfect sense. Yes, this book was written a long time ago but it is well worth the read. the charecters jump out at you, the situations pull you in and you just cannot stop reading. Thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for the ARC of this book in return for my honest review.

Such a great novel. Unfortunately I lost my book and had to purchase again. This is the only book a repurchased in my life. Love the story and rereading it again and taking notes this time. I love how Ann Petry writes, for example, she uses phrases like "Bible carriers". Love this book!!!

I found this book hard to get into the characters hard to keep up with. I also did not like the ending.

Excellent read! A love story set in the 50s, with a great realness to it. Highly recommended.

A great creative and gifted writer. Many of the books I read by the author end with sad endings.

Not an easy read, but worth it. Totally different way of writing that keeps the reader on their toes, and holds you enthralled. A thought provoking and tragic story.
