This is more than just a pretty picture book. Much more. It is an ode--an ode to flight, an ode to beauty, an ode to freedom and, yes, an ode to joy. Story Musgrave has succeeded marvelously in capturing that ephemeral spirit of joy within these pages to share with the rest of us.
The photographs are stunning--in the literal sense. I heard myself gasping as I turned the pages of this magnificent work of art. Occasionally, a giddy giggle would escape as a supremely improbable image appeared along with an understated, "All I did was shoot it. But I was there, and I had a camera " from the author. Sometimes, the image seems almost too intimate, as if we have breached the boundary of photography into pornography, but give yourself license to drool; few aircraft are as beautiful as the T-38 or have such affinity with the camera. In Story Musgrave's expert hands, the bird yields her best aerial performance and her richest portraits. She is his longtime muse and the love affair is evident--even palpable.
Pablo Picasso and Dora Maar. Andrew Wyeth and Helga. Story Musgrave and the T-38.
The text is spare but poetically complements the images and conveys a valuable personal insight or technical detail here and there. For those of us outside of NASA who have admired Story Musgrave's achievements and followed his stellar career, this is as close to sharing his experience as we can get. For those of us who have also loved the sultry sleekness of the timeless T-38, this volume comes even closer.

The Nasa Northrop T-38: Photographic Art from an Astronaut Pilot Hardcover – March 16, 2009
by
Lance Lenehan
(Author),
Story Musgrave
(Author)
We grew to push the aircraft and ourselves to the edge but never beyond. Like restless folks, we kept raising the bar, decade after decade, we always found another peak to climb.
(Story Musgrave). In 1967, Story Musgrave became an astronaut. During his thirty years with NASA, he flew the T-38 supersonic jet, now celebrating fifty years since its creation. This timeless beauty became central to Story's NASA world and to his six space flights, during which he routinely carried a camera to capture its grace and performance. According to Story, the T-38s will continue to maintain the spirit of the organization, the astronauts, and mission control. This stunning collection of private photographs puts you right in the middle of the action. For the space enthusiast and photographer, Story provides a first hand account of the people and planes, giving us a fascinating insight into the culture of the NASA flying world.

I saw this book while visiting the US Space and Rocket Center, and was really captivated by it... except for price. So when I got home I checked Amazon and found it much cheaper so I ordered.
This book will really appeal to space geeks like me. There are millions of books of spaceflight pictures, but this is the only one that revolves around the T-38 training aircraft that the astronauts use to train.
The images are well reproduced and 98% are ones that have not been published before. Some of the images are from the ground and others are from the cockpit while in flight.
Overall in the end this book is great and I look at it frequently since it sits on my coffee table. The book will appeal to space geeks, but if you like good photography of airplanes in general, you will enjoy this book as well!

WOW, phenomenal book! I met Story this past week when we was a guest speaker at our aerospace program. I was so fortunate as to receive an award presented by him and attend a small VIP dinner in his honor. His stories and his spirit absolutely enthralled me and my husband and I ordered this book as soon as we realized it existed. Definitely a must purchase for an aviation enthusiast, especially those who love the Talon. Best book purchase in a long time!

Story could write about changing a diaper, and it would be interesting. As for something about aviation, just excellent! His words and observations, both verbal and visual, add a whole new perspective on an "old" aircraft. Don't miss it!

Wonderful combination of flight, art, and history. Bought this for my brother, who flew this wonderful machine for a few years while in the USAF. Did not come in shrink wrap, so I was able to look through it. Wow!

This collection is a work of art as well as a salute to NASA's T-38 Talon Aircraft. I am a pilot and each page was a jaw dropping experience. Dr, Musgrave has captured, not only in breath-taking photography but also in 'from the heart with love' narrative. As I turned each page, I was in the cockpit, on the flight line and in 'The Cathedral' with him.
If you love photography and/or aviation, this book is inspiring! This little rocket of a plane has been a tireless work horse for NASA and this book is an awesome tribute to that aircraft.
Dr. Musgrave, a true American hero, has again crafted another masterpiece.
Well Done!

I worked on one of the T-38 avionics upgrades and just bought this book on impulse to share it with the team. I expected some good photos but was completely unprepared for the quality and depth of the material.
The photos are evocative. The narrative is intensely personal. This humble expression of such deep affection for this machine by a man of such lofty accomplishment was unexpected, heartwarming, and infectious.
If you have any interest in aviation or photography at all, you will enjoy this.

For many years, the advanced trainer for all USAF pilots was the T-38, a demanding, yet exhilarating airplane to fly. The T-38 was one of the best values our nation has ever produced. What a combination of form and function, brilliantly captured on film.

「T-38タロン好きなら、買っとくかぁ」の一冊
Reviewed in Japan on August 7, 2009Verified Purchase
