Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

PreSchool-Grade 2-- Totally forgettable, this picture book recounts the story of an unnamed girl whose cousin is a brat. It opens with her dreading his arrival, and closes with her hoping that he won't visit next week. In between he acts mean but is adored by his mother. By upsetting the neighbor's ducks, he causes a chase scene replete with underwear on his head. The text is mundane and misses out on the add-on element of the chase. Neither readers nor the girl are allowed to see any lovable or human side of Nat. Even the adoring mother is unchangingly admiring as she joins the parade to try to rescue Nat from the ducks. The colorful cartoon-like illustrations are expressive and lively, but without characters or engaging story they are not enough. Children who have had to deal with a bratty peer or who recognize their own behavior as resembling Nat's will find no comfort or help here. The story is supposed to be funny, but it takes more than underwear to make humor work. --Carol A. Edwards, East Central Regional Library, Cambridge, Minn.
