Product Description
TCM Greatest Classic Films: Legends - Natalie Wood (4FE) SPLENDOR IN THE GRASS (1961) - Deanie (Wood) is a teenager eager to do right in her 1920s Kansas town, but the emotions she shares with boyfriend Bud (Warren Beatty) are too strong. The conflict between behavior and desire may ruin them both in this Oscar® winner* from director Elia Kazan.
GYPSY (1962) - This film version of the Broadway hit sweeps you up in the roller-coaster relationship of Louise (Wood), the wallflower who blossoms into sophisticated stripper Gypsy Rose Lee, and her ambitious mother, Rose (Rosalind Russell). Karl Malden costars.
SEX AND THE SINGLE GIRL (1964) - Snoopy magazine editor Bob Weston (Tony Curtis) and Sex and the Single Girl author Helen Gurley Brown (Wood) square off in a will-she/won't-she breezy battle of the sexes. Henry Fonda and Lauren Bacall join in the comic combat as a warring neighbor couple.
INSIDE DAISY CLOVER (1965) - Daisy Clover (Wood) is a star at 15 – but in the 1930s, "star treatment" can mean anything from being discovered to being discarded. Robert Redford and Ruth Gordon costar in this blend of Hollywood stardust and melodrama.

For one, both were propelled into movie acting careers by viciously driven overbearing mothers. Wood had acting jobs as a toddler, while Harlow's mother kept Baby Jean at home and controlled her entire life, up to the tragic early end.
On that: Both actresses died during the filming of their final roles. Both movies, "Saratoga" for Harlow and "Brainstorm" for Wood, were nearly completed and were finished using some creative rewriting and stand-ins. Both actresses endured failed marriages and abortions, numerous affairs, and both were ridiculed before they were praised. Both were alcoholics at the end of their lives, and both also suffered poor health.
What I wanted to explore with this set of four is whether or not Natalie Wood is the actress Jean Harlow would have grown up to be had she not died of kidney failure at age 26. Wood, as you know, died at the age of 43.
The answer is yes and no. Harlow never played a teenager, altho her first starring role was shot when she was 18. She was always dressed and made up to play older than she actually was. I don't know if Harlow could have been as convincing as Wood in "Inside Daisy Clover", one of the winners in this set. Harlow could have magnificently played Gypsy, but, again from the teenage stuff, she might not have been as powerful as Wood in "Splendor in the Grass", by far the best of this set.
Harlow was even better at slapstick and sight gags than Wood, and altho "Sex and the Single Girl" is atrociously terrible, Harlow could have played the part even more effectively.
So: Buy this set. "Splendor in the Grass" is terrific, and as I seem to say a lot, Natalie Wood is absolutely delicious. The scene in which she springs from the bathtub, naked, and pitches a fit at her mother is one of the most powerful in all moviedom. Warren Beatty's character is dull and wooden, but he's supposed to be, and Beatty brings him to life.
Audrie Christie as Wood's sanctimonious mother and Pat Hingle as Beatty's overbearing father are very strong characters, perfectly depicted.
In 1965's "Inside Daisy Clover", Wood, born in 1938, is turning 27 but at the outset, her character is said to be 15. Wood could always play younger than she was, and this role is just right. The film feels compressed as to the passage of time, but Wood's character's growing maturity is well written and well played. Her breakdown scene in the sound dubbing booth is absolutely shattering.
"Gypsy" is mostly about the character's mother, magnificently played by Rosalind Russell. Wood's Gypsy is plucky and grounded and Wood effectively shows that the real Gypsy Rose Lee was not particularly talented and could only strut, fake stripping, and sing the same song. Wood proves that it takes a really good actress to pretend to be a bad one.
"Sex and the Single Girl" is atrocious and unfunny. Even watching Natalie Wood can't save it.
