Almost five decades later, this, "dog" of an album is being recognized. Jack Sandmeier, the road manager for the band, said he was lucky to sell two albums a date, while "7.5 on the Richter Scale" would sell like hot cakes from the band's live performance of "Let Live and Let Die."
Rolling Stone Magazine had an article about the most touring Entertainment Groups, Number One was the Harlem Globetrotters basketball team all 52 weeks in a year, Number Two, was the Kenton Orchestra at 50. Mr. Sandmeier told me they once did 53 weeks in a row of "one nighters" out of their band bus.
To paraphrase a review of Maynard Ferguson, about this permutation of the Kenton Orchestra, "There may be a classical group somewhere in Europe that can play as tight as this band (as high) but they cannot play as loud.(as Maynard)" Maynard Ferguson was lead trumpet for an eariler version of the Kenton Band when he was in his 'teens.
There will never be a big band as tight, loud, "fat" and as great as this group of nineteen nomadic musicians and their leader, Stan Kenton. - TK
