The National Geographic Little Kids books are favorites in our house. The Big Book of Dinosaurs and the World Atlas are already among our most read books, so I was excited to add this book to our collection. People often critique these books for not going into enough detail, however, I have found that they have the perfect amount of detail for little children. This book got my 3 year old boy and 6 year old girl thinking and asking questions about all sorts of people and inventions and places. They have asked to get books from the library about some of the people written about here; I even found myself learning new things. It's a nice change from the worlds of princesses and trucks that I find so many of their books are about these days. This book is full of real photos and maps, which quickly grabbed my children's attention. It covers athletes, artists, astronauts, civil rights activists, inventors, authors, and presidents, just to name a few.

The 27 profiles in this book are:
King Tut
Aristotle
Michelangelo
William Shakespeare
Jane Austen
Sequoyah
Sacagawea
Abraham Lincoln
Elizabeth Blackwell
Isabella Bird
Matthew Henson
Marie Curie
Mohandas Gandhi
Amelia Earhart
Golda Meir
Ansel Adams
Frida Kahlo
Tenzing Norgay
Ella Fitzgerald
Jackie Robinson
Maya Angelou
Martin Luther King, Jr.
Neil Armstrong
Dong Zhiming
The Beatles
Michelle Bachelet
Malala Yousafzai

There are also an additional 33 mini profiles covering different people, but these are truly mini and just a small paragraph/photo.

This book has just enough information that we feel satiated yet desire to keep researching for more. What I didn't like was that every woman in the book is "The first to..." Which feels to me like I'm putting my 5-year-old under the glass ceiling. My 5-year-old doesn't understand why being the FIRST woman to do such and such is important or even interesting, and I distinctly feel that by having to explain to her with each female highlighted why being the first woman to have done something is noteworthy indicates to her that she is somehow less important/capable than a man. It's awesome that so many women are highlighted, but how about picking women who did awesome things because they did awesome things, not just because they were the first woman to do it after a bazillion men had.

I had high hopes for this book but was disappointed how unbalanced the famous people were picked for it. 41% of the famous people are from USA, 37% from Europe. Throwing in a few names from the non-western non-industrialized nations/continents seemed an afterthought. Out of the 5000+ years of history of China, the only Chinese picked for this book is a paleontologist who was the most successful dinosaur hunter.

Here is the list of names:

King Tut
Wangari Maathai
Nelson Mandela
Dalai Lama
Dong Zhiming
Gandhi
Nain Singh Rawat
Junko Tabei
Tenzing Norgay
Malala Yousafzai
Wolfgang Mozart
Elizabeth Blackwell
Gertrude Bell
Hester Stanhope
Isabella Bird
James Cook
Jane Austin
Jane Goodall
Shakespeare
The Beatles
Berthe Morisot
Einstein
Aristotle
da Vinci
Galileo
Marco Polo
Michelangelo
Marie Curie
Ferdinand Magellan
Mikhail Baryshinkov
Pablo Picasso
Golda Meir
Frida Kahlo
Abraham Lincoln
Amelia Earhart
Ansel Adams
Cesar Chavez
Eleanor Roosevelt
Ella Fitzgerald
George Washington Carver
Georgia O'Keeffe
Harriet Tubman
Helen Keller
Jackie Robinson
John Muir
Louisa May Alcott
Martin Luther King, Jr.
Matthew Henson
Maurice Sendak
Maya Angelou

My daughter just loves this book, she's only five and has picked up pretty quickly a lot of the names and what the people are known for, her favorites being king Tut, the Beatles, and Amelia Earhart! The pictures and information in this book are great, can't wait to purchase more from national geographic!

For many children, there’s nothing more fascinating than hearing an exciting story, only to discover that it’s true! National Geographic’s "Little Kids First Big Book of Who" is a fantastic way to introduce little ones to some of the women and men who have had a major impact on life as we know it. A wide variety of people are included, most of whom will be familiar to parents. Some are described with a somewhat in-depth profile, with pictures and facts describing that individual’s achievements using language that is appropriate and understandable for younger readers. Others are featured as mini-profiles, with just a short paragraph telling the story. And children will love the stories! Even younger toddlers will find the stories engaging and exciting. Better yet, the stories in this book open the door to all sorts of further activities (suggestions are included in the back). Parents might find themselves wishing for a pronunciation guide for some of the names, but aside from that, this really is a fantastic book that children and adults alike will enjoy paging through.
