5.0 out of 5 stars Lots of fun and discovery!
By Annie on July 7, 2016
My son loved the gemstone dig kit! It was slow going at first but once he found the first gem he zoomed through the whole brick in no time. It doesn't come with a small wooden hammer, like other kits, so we used our own from my sons play work bench. The help of the hammer was huge. The only complaint (from my son) is that it didn't have an Agate stone. But he found one of everything else and 2 geodes. Over all this was a great purchase and will be getting the fossil kit in the near future.
P.S. Just a tip, I put his brick in a disposable 9×13 pan for easier clean up!

5.0 out of 5 stars Better Gems than the 4M Crystal Mining Kit
By ❤ Becca ❤ on December 27, 2016
Got this for my 10 year old son for Christmas and he thought he was the richest guy in the world after digging out his 15 gems. We almost thought we got jipped one but we didn't give up and eventually found the 15th stone which ended up being a piece of geode, that I accidentally broke so I told him it was a bonus now he has 16. The block came already broken as you can see in the first picture, not a big deal. This kit would have been even better if it included a pouch. I happened to have one handy that I gave my son to put the gems in. There were also some stones that were not listed in the Gemstone Learning Guide. I couldn't identify them any way. One that was all black (guessing it was onyx) and another that was a polished purple (maybe amethyst). I also bought him the 4M Crystal Mining kit which comes with 8 gems and was less expensive. We haven't dug into that one yet but I got one for my niece also and the gems from the 4M kit were very boring. The National Geographic ones are a lot nicer. This was a fun kit but on the pricey side.

5.0 out of 5 stars Definitely worth it
By Megan on June 9, 2018
I ordered this for my son’s 9th birthday. When we took it out of the package and sat it down to start it broke into 4 pieces, which turned out to be really helpful. The whole family was excited as he dug more and more, and the dirt is soft enough that once most of it is out you can just break it out and brush it off. I thought we had gotten them all but decided to break all the dirt up and found one more that was lightweight so make sure you check everything. We ended up with 15 that are pretty neat and decent sized. I took them inside and washed them off using a soft toothbrush. You will definitely need something to get into all the little books and get the molding out. I am impressed and feel like it is definitely worth the money which I was a little concerned about.

The ONLY negative I have about this is the purple stuff they have on the top of the dirt. I assume it’s a molding of some sort to keep the dirt together in shipment. But I found tiny pieces on some of the gems that were on top and can’t get it off. Kid doesn’t seem to even notice but it’s annoying to me!

5.0 out of 5 stars My girls had a blast!
By Eric on May 19, 2017
My oldest daughter (7 years old) used her own money and bought this kit. She had a blast and was nice enough to let her little sister find some gems too. There are 15 gemstones inside the block so they had a lot of fun and loved all the different gemstones. We ended up using a flathead screwdriver and hammer along with the included tools to break it up easier. Great kit and a lot of gemstones for the kids to discover. It also came with a booklet describing each gemstone. Happy kids!

5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic Customer Service!
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on March 14, 2018
In our set the desert rose was missing, although it was 15 gemstones altogether. However my son was upset for that reason and we contacted Customer Service (Discover with Dr.Cool) which is just fabulous! They told us what kind of gemstones we've got, and proposed to send to us a replacement of missing desert rose or choice of a new set for free as compensation. My son is a very happy and proud owner of gemstones and fossils sets :-) Thank you!

5.0 out of 5 stars Much Much better than the cheaper kits! Great FUN! Kids Loved It!
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on February 12, 2021
This Mega Gemstone kit from National Geographic is just awesome! I've had cheaper kits and this one is ten times better! You get 15 good sized gems, quality learning booklet for kids, large sized brick, chisel, magnifying glass and brush, it's a guaranteed fun packed couple of hours, well worth £27.99, highly recommended!

✔ 15 good sized gems
✔ Large digging brick
✔ Educational booklet
✔ Tools included
✔ Hours of fun
✔ Good value for money

Be prepared for hours of fun with this kit, there's plenty of gems buried in a good sized digging brick. The quality is excellent when compared to cheaper versions, yes I've had them and it's all over in minutes.

The kit comes well presented in a lovely box. Inside is the brick which is sealed and has a fantastic purple mould of a gemstone on top, not sure what it is though. A small plastic chisel is included along with a magnifying glass, which is plastic by the way (kid friendly), and a small brush to dust off the gems when you find them. The enclosed A5 booklet is very educational, it contains 10 pages of useful information regarding the gems that you may find with good, clear, big pictures.

Before digging away, I'd suggest using the enclosed packaging for holding the brick in as this will help catch all the debris from the brick. I also had a handheld vacuum handy to pick up straying bits of brick, this may sound a bit particular but this stuff make a real mess! If it's the Summer than I would be taking it outside to do on the patio.

Adult supervision is needed to help the kids along, but other than that, they enjoyed themselves. All 15 gems were found, randomly scattered throughout the brick.

I soaked the discovered gemstones in water afterwards to clean them up and they now look marvellous. In our dig we found the following gems; Pyrite, Quartz, Tiger's Eye, Aragonite, Amethyst, Fluorite, Hematite, Snowflake Obsidian, Rose Quartz, Aventurine, Sodalite, Red Jasper, Desert Rose, Agate and Geode.

This is a great educational product and provides hours of fun, I'm very happy to recommend it.

Package Contents:
1 x Large brick
15 x Gems (buried)
1 x Chisel
1 x Brush
1 x Magnifying glass
1 x Instructions/Information booklet

The packaging makes this suitable for gifting.

3.0 out of 5 stars Its okay but a few faults and underwhelming
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on January 14, 2021
as a whole it was a really nice kit and a great idea, there were however a few faults I wanted to point out for future shoppers to be aware of and the seller. (included tea light candle in the photo for size reference)
Pros:
- the clay/ sand the gems were hidden in is a great consistency, it doesn't just fall apart but isn't too tough to scrape.
- I was a little worried about the brick arriving broken but thankfully it was fully intact when I received it
- definitely great to keep yourself entertained for a while
Cons:
- it does seem to come down to luck on whether the finds are sizeable as I've seen a few others find much much better things than I did, so bare in mind it is a chance game on how good the gems will be
- the quartz in my dig kit was quite damaged
- the agate seemed to be missing and replaced with another crystal or then really underwhelming, the booklet showed majestic orange stripes and the crystal I cant identify is greyish white with no detail whatsoever (I included a photo of the presumed agate and mystery geode
- the amethyst was extremely small which is a shame as I've seen others get really majestic amethyst geodes out of this kit.
Overall I think if you're looking for something to do it is worth it but if you're most excited about the crystals don't bother.
