The swift bird can stay airborne for about 10 months. The basilisk was an enormous mythical snake, but Titanoboa lived sixty million years ago and was as long as a city. Ancient Greeks believed in Sirens which were half woman half bird. In ancient Egypt cats were considered magical.

Sightings of mermaids have been reported for centuries but were manatees. Dolphins in the Amazon River were considered to be shapeshifters. The mimic octopus can change its shape to look like sea snakes, lionfish, and flatfish.

This handy guide can explain away creatures with mythical powers, legends, and mistaken identities. If you’re looking for good options for your emerging reader, look no further than National Geographic Kids. They employ the same care and research to their readers series that they do to their more complex books. Exciting illustrations and photographs are used throughout. And at $4.99 a piece, they’re a great price.

Mythical Beasts is a Level 3 Fact Reader that is geared toward kids who are reading on their own. Varied sentence structures and more challenging vocabulary make these great stepping stones to chapter books. The publisher’s suggested age is 7-9, but children as young as 5 will enjoy them.

Though my 8-year-old has moved past readers to novels, she was immediately drawn to Mythical Beasts (with a cover like that who wouldn't be?). They’re great options for kids who are interested in a wide variety of topics.
