Informative, easy to read, easy to use. Good history, statistics and latest political update. Covers northern, southern, western and eastern regions by groupings. Really disappointed with Lonely Planet's edition which had not updated with changes in local transportation. Found national geo's as trusted source. Am using it now on a 7 day Taiwan tour even though the quality paper of the book makes it heavy to carry on a daily basis. Highly recommend it. Will now consider National Geographic travel guides in the future.
This book, while good overall, is outdated. It went to press in 2010, and much has changed in the past seven years. It is simply too old for me to recommend, and I regret my purchase. In addition, the maps are somewhat difficult to read—surprising given that this is coming from Nat Geo.
This series has the best cultural information and maps. The practical information covered in other guides such as Lonely Planet is not included which means you may have to carry two books. There are some recommendations, but they are at the high end. Still, if I had to take only one book, this would be it. Frequently, the hotels recommended in other books are awful anyway, so find another source for those. Also, can never follow the directions to restaurants, etc. in those other books. Directions in this book are clear and they have interesting tidbits about the country, etc.
Not just a listing of places, hotels and hot spots. The writing is vivid, interesting and descriptive without making you feel like you are reading the same format for every country. The writing makes you want to be there and yet is clear about any dangers or cultural faux pas' to avoid.
Fabulous information....bought two books for my travels and this one along with the other will be in my take with me stack! Wonderful information on attractions, must sees, and customs. Highly recommend it.
What a useful and great read. It's pretty detailed and talks quite a bit about customs and traditions. I also like the history section which nicely ties much of the discussions on cities well with their histories.
