YELLOW CARGO (1936) Conrad Nagel, Eleanor Hunt, Jack LaRue, Vince Barnett. Nagel is a detectives who goes after a film producer involved with oriental smuggling. Hunt is the pesky girl reporter. Nice little yellow peril film. From 16mm. DEVIL ON HORSEBACK (1936) Lili Damita, Fred Keating, Del Campo. A movie star's press agent spreads a false story of her kidnapping after she arrives in a small country for a visit. Soon soldiers are combing the countryside looking for her. Damita was the love of Errol Flynn's life at one time. From 16mm. CAPTAIN CALAMITY (1936) George Houston, Marian Nixon, Movita, Vince Barnett, Roy D'Arcy. A boat skipper fends off thugs while pretending to hold lost treasure. Grand sea-going adventure, the Grand National way. Nice early color extravaganza is a bit on the corny side, but still fun. From 35mm THE GOLD RACKET (1937) Conrad Nagel, Eleanor Hunt, Fuzzy Knight, Warner Richmond. A good B thriller about a criminal gold smuggling ring. When a federal agent is bumped off, Conrad is called in to investigate. The trail leads to Mexico and back, with the final shootout taking place in a cool underground lair. In what may be the best performance of his career, Barnett is outstanding as a bawdy honky tonk singer and piano player. From 16mm.

All four of these Poverty Rowers (from GRAND NATIONAL Studios) are typical programmers: low budgeted, of middling quality and with second-tier actors who still give their all. Such herculean efforts often make these otherwise ordinary little pictures worth watching, but not always!
Crane Wilbur, writer/director of YELLOW CARGO, has an uncredited role as Montie Brace. Here, comic sidekick Vince Barnett is at it again, this time as a clumsy news fotog. Nagel is a G-Man sent to the West Coast to investigate a Chinese smuggling ring that may be run by a Hollywood producer.
CAPTAIN CALAMITY is another Wilbur story. This time, he's sixth-banana in a botched South Seas pirate adventure that's obviously hampered by lack of funds and talent on both sides of the lens. Second-billed Marian Nixon starred in the silent film SPANGLES (1926), a biopic based on the life of a petite circus bareback trick rider."Calamity" is her last movie. George Houston is best known for 11 "Lone Rider" westerns.
DEVIL ON HORSEBACK is our final Wilbur scripted/directed work. Fourteen-year-old Ann Miller can be seen here in a dancing cameo. This was the last American film for French-born Lili Damita, who appeared opposite Gary Cooper in FIGHTING CARAVANS (1931). She's best known however for being married to director Michael Curtiz and then Errol Flynn. Damita retired after one more European movie.
THE GOLD RACKET is best of the lot. It's Conrad Nagel's third G-Man flick. This time he tries to stop smugglers of precious metals from across the Mexican border. Nagel had an extensive silent career, working with both De Mille brothers, also Sam Wood, Ray Enright, Allan Dwan and Fred Niblo. Comic relief is provided by Fuzzy Knight. He started in a vaudeville act as player of a minature piano.
