Pro-grade, RGB back-lit buttons and displays give instant visual feedback during your set – direct, fluid communication with Traktor Pro or Traktor Scratch. Top Customer Reviews
-its plug and play as long as you have the required version of traktor.
-knobs and buttons function perfectly
-the touch strip works perfect, pitch bend its easy to control with it, and needle search is also really usefull
-the browser knob also works perfect as they say, you touch it and its maximize the browser window, you release it and browser goes back to its size.
Only thing I found weird is that the browser and loop encoders as any knob on a controller is detachable you can take it out if you pull it.
the thing is that these are too loose, if you put the controller facing down they will fall.
This product in itself is a decent product, although does not replace the functionality of a full size controller.
Last year, one of the rubber foot pads fell off, and now it does not sit flat on a surface. Imagine a chair with one leg shorter than the other three: it's really a lot harder to DJ when your controller does not sit flat. However, after waiting 18 days for Native instruments to respond to a request for support on this matter, I still had not heard anything except an email from a bot telling me that they were busy and that it may take 'some days' to get back to me.
After several attempts at finding a phone number that connected me to a person, I got through to their sales department, who passed me onto a support technician. After using the word 'unfortunately' many times, it was explained to me by several people that they did not carry those parts as replacements, but I could replace the whole unit if I was unsatisfied with it.... for $90! They said their manfacturer was the only group in possession of those parts, and suggested I make some kind of replacement myself from a hardware store. Of course I can do that, but I was very disappointed with the response, and the lack of percieved effort on their part to support my needs as a customer.
After some digging through PDF based manuals and watching helpful Youtube videos I was able to map the upper section of the X1 MKII to become my mixer. This brings the unit closer to meeting my needs: a simple unit that allows the selecting, playback, and mixing of tracks. By doing this I've basically disabled most of the FX functionality instead programming those knobs and buttons to control EQ, filter, various kill switches, Cue mix volume, and deck volumes. There are many ways to creatively re-map this unit to become an all-in-one solution for pulling up tracks and mixing them without touching a computer. Unfortunately, out of the box this isn't possible unless the user takes the time to create their own custom mapping or head to 3rd party websites to seek out an existing alternative mapping. For those less tech-savvy this might be too tall an order. I'd appreciate a few simple out-of-box NI-official mappings that support these types of scenarios, though this concept might steer people to make the X1 a complete solution, rather than plunking down another $199 for a Z1. If anyone has questions about mapping the X1 MKII I will be happy to answer. Re-purposing the device and procedures like programming the Shift button to become a modifier for your own needs turns out to be a piece of cake!
The hardware is quite solid. The casing is durable, the buttons are firm and tactile, the touch sensitive knobs do not feel cheap, and the pretty lights add functionality and visual appeal. Unpacking the unit I appreciated the industrial grade bubble wrap and immediately noticed the heavy weight of the X1 with its solid rubber feet. NI is making tough tools for people who know what they're doing. Using this product as your intro to providing digital music sets might feel daunting--but could also be a great way to learn fast. I started with a cheap-o Numark mixer and two Technics. The unit takes some learning time. The touch strip, for example, can be used in a variety of ways and has little lights that eventually, if not right away, make sense.
The addition of a few official all-in-one NI mappings for the X1 (to make it a mixer, for example), plus the inclusion of Traktor Pro 2 as a standard part of this product would easily make this a five star review. A physical product manual and some kind of CD / DVD in the box would also be very welcome. I'm fine with PDF's for quick searches but I really miss being able to take my eyes off the screen and feast my eyes on a physical product manual. In conclusion this is an exciting piece of (add-on) gear and part of a very exciting platform.
