Editorial Reviews

A blindingly bright clarity drives Blitz the Ambassador. With a spot-on sense of flow, he name-checks Basquiat and Lumumba, evokes lovelorn sighs on Accra buses, ?migr? alienation, history's shadows. All set to swirls of brass, distorted guitars, and the crackle and pop of old amplifiers. With a lightning-fast mind, the political boldness of Chuck D, and the sixth groove sense of Fela Kuti, Ghanaian-born, New York-based MC, composer, and producer unleashes psychedelic Afrobeat colors and triple-time rhymes on Native Sun (Jakarta Records//; May 6, 2011). The album was sparked in Accra ye...

Blitz appeared live on a folky/country revue that I always ignore. A political African rapper with horn section, bass, drums and a so-cool Ade-influenced guitarist. Wow. Can't wait for the next record -- 2015. Love you Blitz! Right up there with Beasties and RATM.

We haven't been as excited about an African hip hop album since Emmanuel Jal's, 'Ceasefire' album. Most African hip hop seems to ignore their rich musical heritate as a ready source of sample material or inspiration but Blitz has incorporated Afrobeat, highlife and kora music into an old school hip hop framework to produce a wonderfully warm, cohesive album with some conscious lyrics.

Best hip hop album I've listened to in a long time. He describes his music as "sorta like Fela Kuti mixed with Public Enemy and Desmond Tutu" and I couldn't say it better. Picture funky 70's afrobeat mixed with 80's & early 90's golden-age hip hop breaks, and lyrics spit in 6/8 time that would make Nas jealous. In the track 'Dear Africa,' styled as a letter to Africa, Blitz rhymes over the crooning of Les Nubians:

Plus you birthed us all/ nobody can deny/
Most of the men that said they loved you only robbed you blind/
Swiss bank accounts/ they're hiding all your funds/
Instead of education they're patiently giving children guns/
So while I write you this letter, I need some clarity/
People think that Africa's synonymous to charity.

The only problem with this album is that it's only 45 minutes long.
