Different Strokes for Different Folks
on May 11, 2013
The most helpful thing I can offer is to read lots of reviews before you buy, and take each review with a large grain of salt if the person's hair type is different than yours. This product seems to work well on certain hair types/lengths and not as well on others.
My wife and I bought and starting using this product about five months ago. Her hair is fine and down past her shoulders, my hair is a little thicker/wavier and about to my ears. She lasted less than a week with the product and switched to something else. I'm still using the product and plan to continue doing so.
The reason I bought this shampoo is that it is the least toxic stuff I could find that actually cleans hair and rinses well. The Environmental Working Group Skin Deep website rates various cosmetics on a scale of 0 to 10, with 10 being most toxic. Almost no products get a zero or a ten, and this product scored a 1 out of 10, which is about as good as it gets.
The only "toxins" in this product that even show up on EWG's list are Citric acid, Guar Gum and Aloe Vera, none of which most people would consider toxic.
In comparison, most shampoo/conditioner brands advertised on television seem to score about 4 or 5 (moderately toxic) on EWG's scale because they contain fragrances that can cause allergies and various chemicals that are hard to pronounce like Methylchloroisothiazolinone or DMDM Hydantoin, and of course Sodium Laureth Sulfate.
One 16 oz bottle of NaturOli shampoo lasted me four months when using a generous amount every other day. The $20 price tag seems steep at first, but most people who use this product (including me) do not need conditioner, so that offsets the initial sticker shock a bit.
I was not a fan of this product after the first couple uses. Things I didn't like included:
- Very little lather, wasn't used to that
- My hair would mat up when wet and I couldn't run my fingers through it without hair breaking off
- It was harder to brush my hair when getting out of the shower due to tangles
While my hair felt much lighter than before, if I hadn't read other Amazon reviews I would have given up after a few days. However various reviewers had noted that the symptoms I was experiencing were just my hair "detoxing". I thought that sounded like B.S. but went along with it, and sure enough after a week or so my hair became much more manageable.
The real test though for me was, could this shampoo handle chlorine? I swim almost every day from April to November in an over-chlorinated pool and need a shampoo that can get the chlorine out and de-tangle my hair so that it feels smooth. To my surprise, this shampoo performs quite nicely in that respect.
As for my wife, who has much longer hair than me, she switched to Kiss My Face Whenever Shampoo/Conditioner and has been happy with that brand, which scores 2 out of 10 for toxicity on EWG's website and is also a little more affordable when bought at a grocery store. If you try the NaturOli product and it isn't your thing, the Kiss My Face product is a good fallback.
