"Enlightenment Now: The Case for Reason, Science, Humanism, and Progress"
Is the world really falling apart? Is the ideal of progress obsolete? Cognitive scientist and public intellectual Steven Pinker urges us to step back from the gory headlines and prophecies of doom, and instead, follow the data: In seventy-five jaw-dropping graphs, Pinker shows that life, health, prosperity, safety, peace, knowledge, and happiness are on the rise. You meet several secondary characters along the way. A Detective Clark, who’s still dealing with the death of his son, and a young girl named Mira who’s in need of a heart transplant. I found it interesting how differently Mira and Cora handled dealing with Isaac. All I’ll tell you about Isaac is, Isaac is based on vortex math and the golden ratio. I feel like I received a crash course in mathematics while reading this book. Have I peaked your interest yet?
I will admit this book does contain a “book trigger” for me and when I reached it, I wasn’t sure what I was going to do. But I pushed through, continued to read, and I was very happy that I did. This trigger plays a very big role in this story.
I love to take a chance on a new author by reading their words and I’m glad I read Natural Affection. Tristan’s writing style is a bit different from other authors I’ve read but I truly enjoyed the complexity of this story. Thank you, Tristan, for giving me the opportunity to read your book.
I received a copy of this book directly from the publisher.
I typically have a very skeptical view point when I begin reading a book from an author I've never read before. However, after a recommendation from one of my favorite authors I was very curious. With that being said, I felt this book was a delightful reprieve from my usual cynical thoughts. This story fuses very real issues into a world you would only find (through one's imagination written in a book.). I appreciated the story's moral compass and the hero's choices to pursue justice or vengeance. As a mother myself it touched on something dear to my heart. I feel a warning must be made toward readers....as not everyone will agree with the hero's choices or his moral compass. But I most certainly do value life, and loved the world created in Natural Affection.
The story begins with a traumatic event, and it helped the ball get going right away. Enter Dr. Lennan Vincent, a very passionate doctor set on doing the right thing always. He ends up meeting Cora in an unusual way. (I'll leave some of the details vague for spoiler purposes.). He finds her beauty as intriguing as she finds him. I'll admit there were times that Lennan's flair for words was a bit much for me. I also felt like their relationship evolved rather quickly. But I imagine after Cora's backstory and having a 3 month old baby (Nayley), you probably wouldn't waste much time if you met someone you have a connection with. Dr. Lennan is mysterious and part of the intrigue of the plot is finding out why and what is going on.
The plot is fast paced and laced with mathematics. It's incredible how math plays into our lives and we don't give it much thought. Over the course of the story math plays a heavy hand in the genius Lennan displays regularly. I myself don't think about math other than when I have to do some. (Gulp.). So to have it interlaced with the explanation was very interesting and surprising. Overall, I appreciated the massive amount of references to mathematics and biblical concepts. The author's use of action and romance helped to guide this story without being bogged down by overwhelming mathematical concepts. This is a well thought out story. I can only imagine the research required to explain the concepts used in the story. And the finesse required to make the reader feel like they are part of the world and not being swallowed whole by it. Bravo Tristan Cruz!

Truth is embedded into the very fabrication of our being, hidden in plain sight all around us.
This book, written so brilliantly by Tristan Cruz, is one of the most thought-provoking ("mind-blowing" can also be inserted here) novels I've ever had the pleasure of reading. And I've read hundreds.
This story follows the life of Lennan Vincent, a Doctor passionate about correcting and saving the world. And while this story is brilliantly written- filled with action, mystery, and my personal favorite; romance- my fascination with this story is with the numbers involved.
Throughout the novel, intricately woven between the romance, action, and mystery- are numbers. As the saying goes; Numbers do not lie. Tristan Cruz brilliantly included this in his novel, and not-so-gently puts the truth directly in front of you.
That being said- trigger warning. Not everyone will agree with the morality and direction of this story. But I whole heartedly encourage whoever came to the review section looking for guidance; indulge in your curiosity anyway. You may learn something new, regardless of differing opinions.
Now, I have to emphasize the other aspects of this story. Romance, passion, mystery and action pull this all together in a captivating telling that will leave you breathless.
The creative storyline intertwines with mathematics, facts, and an incredibly rare moral guideline that keeps the story fresh.
I fell in love with the heroic gentleness of Lennan, and the charming and identifiably vulnerable Cora.
'Natural Affection' is by all means a unique, honest and captivating story.
And remember; numbers do not lie.
