We found that the pieces were not overly large, with was nice for the senior, and smaller of the 4.
Then, we discovered that they loved it; one, and all. They wouldn't leave the bag alone, and when we tried to change them over slowly, they just picked the Natural Balance out of the bowls, leaving the old food behind.
Even so, none experience the slightest system upset at the changeover, not even the one with the sensitive stomach, and everyone looks good, is acting well, and continues to look forward to their meals. Even the dog who has never eaten a whole bowl of food in a meal since he was a puppy is now regularly doing so.
I can't guarantee the same results for every dog, as each is an individual, but after trying it on 4 different breeds, and age groups, I can say that I'd recommend it highly as worth a try for someone else!
In just 2 days after switching, her skin irritations disappeared! Couldn't believe it, and was so happy our girl wasn't itchy, sore and irritable. So we are very happy with the food and believe the higher quality that comes with the higher price tag is certainly worth her comfort and probably is around the difference in what we were paying for the extra vet care.
HOWEVER, I just recently read that as of June 2013, Natural Balance was acquired by Del Monte. Now, I'm not going to rant here about multi-national corporations and compromises on quality for the bottom line, but I will be watching for announcements regarding ingredient changes, and will almost certainly switch brands if I even get a whiff that quality has been compromised. After all, a competing big multi-national corporation changed the formula on her previous food and got us here in the first place.
within just a few days, we noticed a drastic improvement in both dogs. chloe was not itching quite as much, and seemed to have quite a bit more energy. our other heeler (dingo), who is much younger and in better shape, also started acting as if he was more energetic. both dogs also shed a few extra pounds of fat within the first month. it's worth noting, however, that it seems the dogs shed more when we keep them on this food. which is unfortunate, because these dogs already shed A LOT.
we're about six months in with this dog food. it's obviously quite a bit more expensive than dog chow, but it does seem true that the dogs eat significantly less food when we feed them this product. there have been a couple times when we've run out and had to go buy a bag of whatever we could get our hands on to get by for a couple days. in those cases, it seems we have to feed them twice as often to keep them happy.
both in the store and online, this food costs about $50-60 per 28-lb bag. every now and again though, it comes on sale through various retailers (usually wag.com) for less than $40. when it does, we stock up. our dogs love it, and it keeps them happy. that keeps us happy too! i would definitely recommend trying out some of the natural balance products if you're considering buying quality dog food.
