On July 21st, 2015 I placed an order for LIT with Duck Meal for Small to Medium Dogs. What I received was different from the product I had received in the past. In the past they were in fact "chews" that took my dogs several hours to finish. The chews I received from the July 21st order were brittle and broke apart easily in my hands. I emailed Amazon with the issue and they offered to replace them for free.
I received the replacement order today (July 29th) and the replacement items were the same as the ones I had received early. Brittle and easily broken.
Both of these packages had a Best By Date of 11/13/2016 with the following Lot Numbers:
3142PD NT2 20 21:30
5142PD NT2 20 05:59
Because of the first lot being bad I went and purchased a package locally which had a Best By date of 5/6/2016 with a Lot Number of 4127PD
I've attached a photo of the bad chews on the left with the good chews on the right.
For the time being I wouldn't buy from Amazon and I would suggest Amazon pull these packages with bad lot numbers.
"I am sorry we are not Natural Balance Pet Foods."
I did go to the website identifying itself as Dick Van Patten Natural Balance Pet Food/treats.
The website is : http://www.naturalbalanceinc.com/
Yet the answer was from a seller. Does the actual company not want to be contacted?
Interim Review pending company response.
The country of origin is not stated. It simply says manufactured for NB. Another reviewer contacted the company and was told by phone, that it is US made. However, the phone answer had inconsistencies, and really didn't make a lot of sense. Some NB treats state, made in USA. This doesn't. I have asked the company for an e-mail response, and told them I will copy and paste their answer in my review. I have included a link to the daily Consumer Affairs newsletter I receive. Apparently, since being purchased from Del Monte, the food has been changed significantly. Read user reviews on that site.
My son's beautiful Australian Shepherd died while he was on a now known Death Food, with China origins. we take country of origin seriously. A plus for this treat is the LIT label. It means limited added carbohydrate and protein sources. It is common for companies to buy cheap premixes from China, to add to their dog food. These foods/treats can then be manufactured in the US and claim US manufactured, without disclosing those sources. The LIT apparently means that less of these premixes are being used.
I only buy treats/food/even pizzle sticks, made in the US only.
When I see the term "manufactured for," with no designation of the country in which it was manufactured, a red flag goes up. Why the big secret?Read more ›
Packaging claims: Encourages chewing instinct and supports healthy teeth and gums. Reformulated for easy chewing and digestion. Formulated with parsley and alfalfa for fresh breath. Vitamin C added to support immune function. No statement on the package as to where these treats are manufactured or packaged (unlike some of the other Dick Van Patten branded treats), so I suspect it is not in the USA. Take that as you will. Grain free. The usual Dick Van Patten claims of: Assisting local animal charities, and, the Natural Balance "Buy with Confidence" claim (each production run tested and posted). The first five ingredients listed are: pumpkin, potato starch, chicken meal, glycerin, and papaya. Scanning on down the list, there are no red flags and plenty of flavorful and acceptable ingredients.
Opening the 15 oz package, which is re-sealable but I wish it had a sliding zip-lock to make it easier . . . the odor is remotely meaty, but the pumpkin and papaya odors really predominate. Not disagreeable. These chew treats are 4 inches long, bone shaped, and are packed 12 to a bag. My dogs are on the small end of that 25-50 pound size window, so I break the treats in half and give each dog one (breaking one in half will require strong hands - or a hacksaw).
I selected one and attempted to bite a small piece off the end. The rubbery treat did not yield, and the experience brought to mind the idea of trying to nibble a piece of tread from a truck tire.Read more ›
While similar to Greenies, this Dental Chew claims to be grain-free although it does contain controversial ingredients such as Lecithin (Soy). The top 2 listed ingredients are Sweet Potato and Chicken Meal and it's safe to say that this Dental Chew is Sweet Potato and Chicken Flavoured.
As soon as I received the package this morning, All of my dogs (my own plus 3 fosters) started sniffing the box. When I opened the box, my dog immediately sat at the ready for treats and the 2 older fosters immediately followed. My latest foster, a lab-daschund puppy tried to climb and chew the box. So the product is sufficiently smelly enough to be attractive to the pickiest of dogs at first sniff.
I gave each dog a treat and the 2 older fosters immediately went to their respective pillows and started chewing. My dog who is extra picky and doesn't like hard things started carrying it around from place to place around the house before burying it under a couch cushion. The lab-doxie puppy decided that chewing was too slow and tried to toss it back into her throat and started choking. I quickly pulled it out and confiscated it. However, she found the buried one and proceeded to toss the entire Dental Chew down her throat again. So I confiscated that Dental Chew as well.
As with Greenies, there could be a choking hazard depending on the dog so I recommend that dogs be closely supervised when given this chew.Read more ›
