This book The Natural Menopause Solution offers much that is worthwhile to the menopausal & perimenopausal woman. Included are a sensible high protein, low carb diet plan, yoga exercises, important vitamins & herbs as natural HRT, and most menopause topics including hot flashes, insomnia, hair loss, depression and low libido. While the diet is balanced and nutritious (examples: for breakfast, a hardboiled egg, muffin & smoothie; for lunch, a slice of cheese pizza & a banana; and dinner, boneless chicken breast & baked potato), most recipes are uncommon and may not be to everyone's taste. For instance, the staple smoothie is a concoction that includes milk, lime juice & almond butter (a stomach churner for me), and many of the recipes are exotic or international, i.e. Gado Gado (Hearty Indonesian Salad) and Cod in Curry broth, as well as the main staple grains being quinoa and couscous. You can, of course, create your own recipes by just omitting what you don't like and keeping the ingredients you do. As a Prevention magazine subscriber, I have recently been offered this book at a far higher price than I found here on Amazon, where I purchased a slightly used copy at a third the price. This book is the same strongly bound, shiny hardcover edition offered by Prevention and is a fine reference book to have in your library.

I have a huge failing. I admit it. I keep buying these books in hopes of finding some revolutionary new information that will help me regain my life after menopause. This isn't that book. Nothing new in the fight here. I don't know a single, solitary woman who has the time to deal with a meal specific diet plan. Not on this planet anyway. My husband is a picky eater and I don't have the inclination to cook two different meals every day. What I need is for someone to cut to the chase and give me the guidelines to follow so I can incorporate them into my everyday cooking. Guess what? Most of us that cook and eat and have for 50 odd years know all this stuff anyway.
Buck up ladies. This isn't the answer. Maybe the next book out will be. :0)

Really basic information that you can get by reading any women's magazine. As far was weight loss goes, their program is 1200 calories - ANYONE, can lose weight on a 1200 calorie diet. The Phase 1 diet is 1200 cal for 5 days then bumps the calories up to 1500 during phase 2.

If you want to lose weight, log into any free online food tracker, track your every day calories (no dieting) and see how much you eat in a day. I'm sure you'll be surprised at the number .. then to lose weight ... scale back your food. Yes, it's that simple.

The menopause info wasn't new or exciting .. if you've read any of Suzanne Somer's books she basically cover bio hormones. Nothing concrete on any herbals other than a list of thing to try. Menopause is a tricky and one size does not work for all .. it's a try and try again for some kind of normalcy.

I had hoped that by buying this book I would learn something I didn't know about easing into menopause. I can't really criticize the book as I guess it has good information but it's nothing earth shattering. Just common sense on eating healthy and getting enough exercise and vitamins.... I'd return it but I'm too tired from dealing with perimenopause so I'll put it in a drawer and eventually maybe give it away...

This book is well organized and easy to read, and the information presented is useful. However one of the major keys to the plan presented here is to follow a meal-specific diet. I was hoping that having a defined meal plan would make it easier to incorporate healthier eating habits, but the plan in this book didn't work for me at all. The recipes were fine for the most part, but the meal plan calls for a different breakfast, lunch, dinner, and snack every day. Variety is great, but with a full-time job and the other responsibilities that most women have, it was just too much cooking for me. Also, the recipes tend to incorporate a lot of dairy and/or soy, as well as nuts and eggs -- things that a lot of people are sensitive to. The "Slimming, Cooking Smoothy," which is a cornerstone of the eating plan, contains dairy or soy milk and almond butter. I can't do dairy, so I made it with soy milk and omitted the almond butter, and the result, to be honest, was pretty yucky. So the bottom line is that if you don't mind cooking three meals/day, every day, and don't have any food sensitives or allergies, the meal plan might work for you. For the rest of us, just reducing our carb intake, watching portion size, and eating a variety of fruits and veggies would probably do the same thing.

I feel better eating healthier, however some of the meals require over an hour to prepare (would like options for quicker meals). Very informative though.

I was pleased to find this book at such an affordable price. I am finding the information to be very helpful! Tips on sleep, food, what to eat, how to take care of your body as it goes through perimenopause to menopause is really crucial information.

If I were to take a guess given the content, I would say this doctor is trying to help women go through this transition without hormone supplements (which, for some women, can literally be deadly).

I'm sure it doesn't contain much new information. But, perhaps, it will help some women incorporate strategies into their lives that will allow them to avoid that particular western medical monster.

Honestly, we've fooled ourselves into believing that these transitions are easy just because we've been taught to believe there must be an instant answer out there somewhere. "Pop a pill" has been ingrained in our psyches for so long, we have unrealistic expectations when it comes to answers to our health. The truth is, it's not easy. You don't have time to eat healthy? Then you're too busy. You need to stop going at 200 RPM (which, by the way, is probably one of the things contributing to your difficulty transitioning through menopause), *make* time to eat healthy, exercise and meditate. Then, you will begin to see a change.

A simple explanation for a complex problem. But so few of us *want* to make those changes. So, our health declines.

Stop, breathe, examine, reassess, incorporate changes, and heal. It's not supposed to be easy. It's the things we have to work hard for that we tend to value :-j
