About half of the information in this book is outdated (the stuff on lighting was preLED.) The second half of the book is extremely useful and makes the purchase worth while. The information on aquascaping and biotopes cannot easily be found on the internet and the pictures are beautiful .

Many aquarium books seem to be targeted at 12 year old kids who need a picture to text ratio of at least 2 to 1 and no real explanations of what's going on. At the other end of the spectrum are a few written like graduate textbooks that are just too much effort to read for those of us who view aquariums as a relaxing hobby to enjoy. This book, in contrast, hits the perfect happy medium: the writing is only as technical as it needs to be to present salient information. It is a book with a very high information content, but the clarity of the writing makes it a fun read as well as a good example of what other aquarium books should be, but usually are not. I recommend it highly to any adult reader who is interested in marine aquaria.

Do yourself a favor. Reference more than one book before seriously beginning a saltwater hobby. Much of what you will read is a mix of fact and opinion given by someone who has done more experimenting than you. Take heed to what they say, but don't hold it to be the gospel truth.
This book makes a great counterpart to "The Conscientious Marine Aquarist". They clarify each other. I do feel the need to warn you that they are higher level reading, but they are well worth the effort. Both of these books cover broad subjects. This is perfect for the beginner.

Someone recommended me to read this when I first got a reef tank. It didn't tell me anything I didn't already know from researching a little online. I'd only get this if you are completely clueless and are starting your first tank

Very nice book, but just a bit dated. Of course, basic biology and chemistry don't change.

Great book!

A really excellent book. Written in 1997 and so is not up to date in terms of the latest LED lighting etc but the book is packed with knowledge and information. The emphasis is on live rock and sand, sump, and chemistry, and growing corals according to their requirements...common sense! There’s plenty of science in this book which I like. I learned a lot from reading this book. The corals and fish are broken down into their particular oceans and also into the zones that they inhabit....exactly what I needed. Oddly SPS are rarely mentioned in this book, due I guess to the difficulty of keeping them at the time of writing. It is however still a book worth owning. It remains the book I refer to more than any other for snippets of wisdom.

This book will change your life!
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on May 16, 2003Verified Purchase
If you're a beginner, this book will give you a beautifully illustrated step-by-step guide to starting your first aquarium. If you're an intermediate, it will give you a detailed understanding of the wonderfully complex chemical, biochemical, and biological processes going on in your aquarium, and how to turn them to your advantage. It will also encourage you to create "biotope" aquaria, in which the species and the conditions are precisely suited to one another, as they are in nature. If you're an advanced fishkeeper, it will challenge you to throw away most of your expensive hi-tech appliances and work with nature! And, into the bargain, it will challenge you to become a conservation-minded aquarist. Quite simply the best aquarium book I've bought in twenty years. I only wish Tullock had gone all the way, and described mangrove and "Miracle Mud" systems, in which all filtration is entirely natural.
