Editorial Reviews

From the Author

If you have a hobby that you enjoy, don't keep it to yourself! Start a blog and share your experience with the world. You never know who may be watching/reading. In my case it was Ulysses Press. Writing a book was something I never expected to do, but now that it's all said and done, I'd do it again in a heartbeat. I'm so glad I'm able to inspire new soap makers and reach people from all over the world. <3 Heidi Corley Barto

The Natural Soap Chef covers all the basics and shares some great recipes and ideas for making soap. It also has wonderful photography. The content is organized, and the recipes are easy to follow. I'd recommend it to anyone beginning to make soap. Experienced soapers should be warned: most of the recipes are based on one oil recipe, so there is not a lot of variety, but if you are learning to make soap and want to try different things while you master an oil recipe, this is a good book to read. Also, this book does not cover how to create recipes of your own, which some reviewers didn't like, so if you are looking to learn how to do that, you probably don't want to check this book out. However, if you are looking for creative ideas and basic information, this book is excellent.

Almost the entire book consists of one soap recipe meaning the oils are the same and in the same proportions except for 1 recipe that had some Hemp Oil and one or two that had some Castor Oil. This main recipe is tweaked by switching out the distilled water with other liquids (tea, beer, milk, etc) and using a different fragrance. Sometimes there's additives to match the fragrance (tea leaves, coffee grounds, fruit zest, an infused olive oil, etc). This is a beginners book with pretty pictures which I did enjoy. Not a resource for trying truly different recipes or even learning how to create a soap recipe.

I was excited to see this book as I thought at last someone had created wonderful natural products. While the soap is handmade and uses natural oils in them, the addition of fragrance oils makes these soaps totally unnatural. There is nothing natural about synthetic fragrances. The recipes are basically the same with a different fragrance added in to change the recipe. There are many other books out there that are far better at giving varied recipes and instructions than this one. I think the title is very misleading.

I have always wanted to make my own soap from scratch but have always been a bit intimidated by the entire process. I continue to read up on the process and techniques and have started sourcing some of the ingredients so I can give it a try. I was drawn to The Natural Soap Chef because of the food tie in that many of these recipes have. I am a huge foodie and love combining new flavors and seasonings in the kitchen so the idea of incorporating the same concepts into soap making sounded intriguing.

The first couple of chapters of this book are dedicated to newbies like myself who have no idea what we are doing. There is a discussion of the ingredients, necessary materials, and `extras' you can add to your recipe. There is a chapter dedicated to explaining the soap making process and step by step directions in detail. This includes many pictures, which I always find helpful. Most of the recipes make approximately 8 three ounce bars per batch which seams like a fair amount.

After the author has given you all the information you need, she ventures into the recipes. I really like that she starts this section with `beginner recipes'. The first one is a simple olive oil soap that contains only olive oil, lye and water. Not all the beginner recipes are that simple...some still seem a little intimidating to me. I think I would like to see a few more recipes that only have one or two oils....that makes the process seem less intimidating for me somehow.

The recipe selection is amazing...there are recipes using beer, goats milk, coffee, honey and many other unique combinations. Chai Tea soap and Almond Cookie soap sound absolutely mouth watering and I can just imagine how they would smell in the shower.

Received my copy yesterday and I have to say its full of great ideas! Its a cold process book and all of the recipes are for small 2 lb batches. Several ideas to texturize the tops of soap and some ideas for additives I never would have thought of. All of the recipes seem solid as I ran a few through a soap calc and they balanced out well. On my days off I will definately be trying some of recipes. I recommend this book!

This book is well organized and clearly written. She explains the process of trace very well with corresponding photos. She also discusses lye safety in detail and how to handle it. I like the small description next to each photo of the recipes which gives great info on the various properties of the ingredients or the personal reason why she developed it. She uses several olive oil infusions, fruit & vegetable purees, milks, coffee, tea and beer. This is nice reminder that we don't have to use only water as the liquid. Yes, most of her recipes use the same oils but if you're a beginner it will really simplify things for you. At the end she includes a nice glossary of terms and a list of resources. If you're new to soap making, this is a good book to buy. If you're more advanced you may appreciate the various infusions and interesting ingredients she uses. I like the book and recommend it to anyone interested in learning to make their own soap.

I've read over about ten books on soaping while trying to get my bearings in the craft. Some books are too confusing or they focus on areas that have no relevancy to me such as making soaps that look like pieces of cake. This book, to me, is exactly the level I was looking for. Nothing in it is overkill. It's short and to the point. I felt the mix of recipes is good and I'm happy I purchased it. It is one of about three books I will use as my starting blocks as I continue learning the art of making soap. A year or two down the line, it may no longer appeal to me but for right now its crucial and I feel its a very well-put together book. I'm definitely happy to have it in my library.
