Well, that happens in a BIG way. Penny accidentally becomes embroiled in Emery‘s [a Natural Mage] quest to find the person who ordered his brother’s death when she bypasses a ‘magic’ detour sign one night and happens upon his magical battle. Chaos, much chaos & hilarity ensue.
The book goes at a pretty good pace. The author doesn’t try to complicate your world with spell casting, and the magic references that she does put in there for authenticity are spot on. Fans of the Fire & Ice Trilogy will be thrilled to see Darius featured in the book - it’s timeline appears to be concurrent with the second book of that series.
I don’t want to give away all the best gems in the book [it IS K.F. Breene after all], but these were two of my favorite LOL moments:
“I basically lie for a living,” I said, not moving. “As my mother and the person responsible for teaching me morals, that should give you pause.”
A little eccentric? People had thought she was crazy for years. This would dump her into the “best not to look at her directly” bucket.
K.F. Breene manages, yet again, to produce pure, snarky gold that makes me go back to chapter 1 as soon as I see “The End”. And after checking the titles and the release dates of the next two books, I’ll be counting down the days for the future releases.
The Natural Witch, Penny Bristol, is well-crafted, well-developed, and grows with every page. She has a fun and quirky personality. Her sense of humor had me laughing. Her big heart and growing magical powers had me on the edge of my seat many times. The girl that starts out sheltered and overly protected by an overbearing mother grows into a kickass woman. It's fun and inspiring to be part of it. An all-around fun, suspenseful, entertaining read.
The urban-fantasy world-building is believable and complex without getting bogged down. How magic works in this world is pretty cool. I could see Penny weaving spells with the elements and getting magic to conform to her will. Very cool.
Note that KF Breene interleaves this series with her Fire and Ice trilogy. Same world, same style of writing, same humor and page-turning suspense. I love both series. Which series you read first is a dilemma. I read the first two books of this series, Magical Mayhem (MM1 & MM2), and then read the three in Fire and Ice (FI1-3). There are spoilers doing it that way. But Penny makes appearances in Fire and Ice that doesn’t make as much sense without reading this book (MM1), so I recommend reading FI1, MM1, FI2, FI3, and then MM2, but if you don’t want to break up the flow of Fire & Ice, read FI before MM.
The story is a spin off from the Fire and Ice trilogy and it begins in a scene from the first Fire and Ice book. I loved that tie in, as it brought in some fun back story as to how the main character, Penny, gets to be where she is. The book has a great pace, and the characters are well written and filled out. I love the humor in it, as well as the steady action.
If you haven't read Fire and Ice, no worries, this book works well as a stand alone.

If you read and loved the Fire and Ice Trilogy - which is also set in the DDVN universe - then I’m confident you’re going to love Natural Witch. I wasn’t Penny’s biggest fan when she was guest appearing in Reagan’s trilogy but I have to say she’s a much more interesting character when you get to follow her and get to know her better. Reagan is still my favourite female of the two and watching her from Penny’s point of view is amazing, as I think it made me love her that much more. Still, this is Penny’s book and we only get a glimpse of Reagan here, so that’s all I’m going to say about her. Penny. Wow. She’s so sweet and clumsy and a compete badass on the quiet. She’s so endearing, it’s hard not to love her and her quirks. I love that she has ‘pet rocks’. It’s such a silly thing but it makes you smile. I also love the fact that Emery loves her little quirks too. He’s not your typical hero either; he’s more of a reluctant hero that thinks of himself as a villain. He’s had a rough life and it doesn’t look like it’s going to get any easier any time soon. The path he and Penny find themselves is a dangerous one, but together they at least stand a chance. I can’t wait to follow their story and see how it unfolds. I have no doubt that it’s going to be an emotional ride.
KF Breene has a way of making her leading ladies soft and gentle but totally badass!
The story is exciting and fast paced, but not so much so you need to read it 3 times just to understand it properly.
Only one problem I have to wait until April for Natural Mage 😲
Guess I'm gonna need to reread the Fire and Ice Trilogy and probably dust off the Darkness Series, Sasha, Stefan, Charles and Jonas have been left alone for too long 😘
