Once I found this out, I started taking this 6-hour time release 300mcg formula:
Works great. Aside from helping to fall asleep, it reduces how often I wake at night, and avoids the slight grogginess I used to get from high-dose melatonin pills like these Nature Made ones.
I do still keep these 3mg pills around for situations like jetlag, but I use them as sparingly as possible now that I understand that they spike melatonin up to levels your body never reaches normally. There's zero reports of bad reactions to high melatonin doses, but it seems safer to emulate what the body is doing rather than go way out of natural ranges.
Finally, two other sleep aids I'd recommend: glycine (an amino acid), and lavender. Both have peer-reviewed scientific studies showing efficacy, and neither causes grogginess. In fact, glycine has the effect of reducing impairment from lack of sleep.
The biggest thing I love about these is that they aren't like sleeping pills or aids. They don't make you feel groggy or sick like some medications do, and they don't "knock you out" to sleep. It feels SO incredibly natural and you just drift off to sleep. You know how you feel when you are super tired and if you lied down you would fall asleep? It feels exactly like that but you feel more relaxed about it. Theres no "sign" that its working per say, you just get a relaxing sense of tiredness and you can just fall asleep peacefully.
I recommend this to dialysis patients and anyone who has a hard time falling asleep.
Be sure to ask your doctor of course, especially if you have any medical problems!
Hope this helps!
