Previously, I was washing our two kittens' plastic litter boxes, between changing out the litter. Aside from the time it takes, it was hard on my back, bending over to scrub them. Since the ammonia smell leaches into the plastic and one of our kittens scratches a lot, it was looking like I'd need to replace them before long.
We buy unscented litter since it's best for cats' sensitive noses and these help keep the smells down since they're made with baking soda. Realistically, these cost almost as much as buying new plastic boxes and don't last as long but I prefer them since they're biodegradable. Being able to toss the litter in the box simultaneously is also a nice convenience.
Made in the USA. When they first arrive, I use a sharpie and mark a line inside each box, at 2 and 3 inches (slightly OCD, haha) so it's easy to eyeball that it's kept at the right amount recommended for our litter. Precious Cat Ultra Premium Clumping Cat Litter, 40 pound bag
The size is as listed in the description, roughly 21" long, 15.25" wide, and 7.75" high. Great size and the largest I've found on Amazon. They are fine for kittens or elderly cats to get in without trouble (I think you could use a craft knife if you wanted to shorten a side though).
The huge sticker on the inside of the trays comes off easily and we put them, sticky side up, on the counter one of our cats likes to jump on. We toss them after a week or two as they get dusty and whatnot but it works well as a free cat deterrent. After a couple sticky landings, she generally stays off for a week or two, haha.
We use these trays inside the plastic ones since we already had them and they were fairly new. I add a little extra baking soda in between the plastic and the disposable, just a thin dusting to coat the plastic. Rather than change these out monthly, we change them every couple of months.
They definitely would work fine alone but would need to be changed every six weeks or so minimum (we have 3 boxes between 2 cats). I usually dump them when they're starting to break down or thinning at the bottom (and we change out the litter in between as needed).
For regular scooping, we got a litter genie here that I'd recommend too (although we don't use the expensive refill bags). Litter Genie Plus Ultimate Cat Litter Odor Control Pail
If you're interested in a scoop that doesn't require the shaking back and forth, the Litter Lifter is great because the slats run vertical, allowing the clean litter to fall through more easily than others we've used. Litter Lifter Cat Litter Scoop (Colors May Vary)
I do wish these were a bit wider to fit the CatIt covered litter box. I got one for my aunt's elderly cat and it was so nice, we decided to get one for our cats too. Catit Jumbo Hooded Cat Litter Pan - Warm Gray
The description for the CatIt box on Amazon is wrong though, as I'll post with photos in my review there. These trays are perfect length-wise but could be around four inches wider to fully fit inside. Needless to say, it's a huge cat outhouse, haha, so I'm not discounting these in their rating.
Uploading some photos so you can get a closer look. The gallon milk jug is just there for size to scale. When we first got our kittens, they were just over 10 weeks old and my husband was concerned they would have trouble getting into their first litter box (hence the Sterilite plastic shoe box "step"). We kept the step because we found it to be a good litter catch and bag rest when scooping, haha...
The huge Amazon cardboard box helped contain everything for the occasional bit we'd find had been flung onto a wall. We vacuum frequently but once a month or so, it's easy to dump any spilled litter from the cardboard box, back into their trays. The wee pads, I'd picked-up for, just in case, while inside their carrier (since we were driving over an hour home, when we got them)...
I later put a couple pads around their trays for a litter catch. On the occasion they didn't feel we cleaned a box quickly enough for their liking, they peed on a pad over cardboard, rather than the carpet. We've since bought litter mats and the likes but for the interim, these were our solutions that worked for us. Highly recommend these disposable trays. Hopefully my rant of strange tips help someone! Smile.
I was afraid that a disposable box would be too flimsy or that pee would soak through, but that is not the case with these. In fact, one of my cats sits on the edge of the box with all four paws, sticks his bum over the side and pees into the corner. I've never seen any soakage, nor has the edge broken or buckled under his full weight.
When it comes time to replace the litter, I just put this whole thing into a trash bag. No more dumping the litter while holding my breath or breaking my back from washing them out in the tub.
One thing I wanted to note was that even with the Jumbo boxes, the walls aren't super high. One of my cats is a litter flinger, so what I did was place this inside of a large cardboard box and cut down a side for the cats to step in. That way the litter gets flung into the cardboard box and not my carpets.
Well, I know my cats. I know how they LOVE to pee all over the walls and bottom of the box...there is never anything in the darn center. Scooping their urine and poo involves digging and scraping it off the walls. Soooo not fun, and no matter how efficient I try to be with getting the clump off the wall in one piece, it ALWAYS breaks apart into these tiny, teensy little bits. Now maybe the average bear can ignore this, but for an obsessive compulsive freak such as myself, those pesky clumps were taking away my sanity...piece by piece.
Enter Nature's Miracle disposable box. Because it allows air circulation, the clumps can dry and get this, they actually STAY as clumps. Yes, the deviants still continue to urinate all over the walls and bottom, but once you tilt the box, the clumps fall right off. Woot woot! My mental health has been saved!
Other win win factors...the box does not leak. It is extremely lightweight, and it is lined with baking soda so it doesn't smell. And, the jumbo size has walls high enough to catch my cat's preference for standing room only, ain't gonna squat to pee style.
Life is good.
One note, the jumbo size has high-ish walls, but the box itself is medium size. When I think jumbo, I think jumbo in both height AND width, but it still works for this cat family.
Happy scooping, Peeps.
