Perika St. John's Wort contains the hyperforin part of the plant, which recent studies have shown to be the component that affects depression. I can attest to this, because I have used other SJW products containing the whole plant, and they did nothing to help me.

I actually find Perika similar in effect to Zoloft, which I took for two years. There are absolutely no side effects with Perika, it is 10% of the cost of Zoloft, and easily available. The half-life of hyperforin, however, is about 9 hours, unlike Zoloft at around 25 hours, so it's important to take Perika three times a day. If I miss a dose, I can feel my serotonin levels dipping.

As all the disclaimers state, don't take something for depression before consulting a physician. I agree, especially with severe depression which I experienced after my husband's lengthy serious illness (that's why I started on Zoloft). However, there is a place for Perika if the depression is mild to moderate, and if there is adequate emotional support nearby to initiate an alternative treatment in case the Perika doesn't work. However, if it does work, it's a very simple solution to a very complex problem.

I have mild depression and anxiety. I have been prescribed zoloft, wellbutrin, and cymbalta - only to be a poster child for the side effects of each of these (especially the cymbalta, horrible stuff!). I decided that I needed to at least try a natural remedy before I moved on to the next prescription. I read about Perika and decided to try it although I wasn't holding out too much hope. Boy, I was wrong. I know it says to take it a month before you see results but I noticed results within the first week of taking it. It is kind of a bummer to have to remember to take it 3x a day but it is so worth it. It is literally my "happy pill" with no side effects. And although I am terrible at remembering to take meds on time, I can easily remember to take the Perika because my mood starts to dip after about 5 hours from the last dose. If you have issues with depression and anxiety I would highly recommend trying Perika before subjecting your brain to the awful chemicals of prescription meds.

I've been using Perika for several months and I've found that it's working better for me than any other brand of St. John's Wort. I've suffered depression for years and this product has helped me. I would reccommend it to anyone, particularly before using a prescription drug. Drugs never worked for me. Just give it at least a three month trial.

I started taking this mid-July. By September I could notice a positive difference. October was even more amazing! And now that November is almost over, I am a very pleased customer. My life is so much better with this stuff- depression has lifted and PMS is so much better! I can handle stress now that I have been taking this Perika regularly. I do take three a day. Sometimes I miss one but I can't say I notice. They are easy to swallow and they have been extremely effective. Years ago I tried an SSRI and stopped because I didn't like the side effects. I have no side effects on the Perika and it works just as well. You do need to be careful about drug interactions though. St. John's Wort will cause your liver to metabolize drugs at a different rate (often faster, sometimes slower from what I have read). This includes alcohol, perhaps that's why some use it to deter drinking.

For years I always had a haze of depression looming in my brain. I could feel it and couldn't get rid of it. I wasn't sleeping right,, so I was always tired, I wasn't happy, I didn't laugh, everything was a chore. There was nothing going on that would make me depressed. I felt it was a chemical imbalance, more than anything. I noticed my Mom had the same feelings. Any way, I finally tried Perika, St. John's Wort. I noticed a difference within 24 hours for me. I am sleeping deeply for the first time in years and waking up rested and full of energy. Even my husband noticed. I would recommend this to anyone who is feeling depressed and can't seem to enjoy the day or laugh. Good luck.

I much prefer this to the six different prescription antidepressants I tried--your mileage may vary. I am not opposed to taking prescription antidepressants, but every one I tried had unacceptable and sometimes alarming side effects, unlike Perika. As other reviewers have pointed out, Perika is standardized for hyperforin, which research shows is better for relieving mild-to-moderate depression than hypericin (the active component more commonly seen in St. Johnswort products). Hyperforin deteriorates quickly and thus has a short shelf-life, so most brands of St. Johnswort have precious little of it by the time they are purchased. Standardized, shelf-stable products are essential. I have tried five different formulations of hyperforin-standardized St. Johnswort, and this is my go-to brand in terms of effectiveness and value. Kira made me feel sleepy (some do prefer Kira for the calming effect), Dr. Weil's seemed to lack potency. The two New Chapter products I tried were very effective, but they cost four times as much! The only side effect I've noticed is a greater tendency to freckle in the sun--St. Johnswort increases sun sensitivity, so please be mindful of this. It also interacts with some medications, so do check with your doctor about your prescription meds.
