About this item

Asafoetida is the dried latex (gum oleoresin) exuded from the living underground rhizome or tap root of several species of Ferula (three of which grow in India), which is a perennial herb (1 to 1.5 mtr. High).Asafoetida has a pungent smell, thus its trivial name stinking gum, but in cooked dishes it delivers a smooth flavour reminiscent of leeks. It is also known as food of the gods, devil's dung, jowanibadian, hing, hengu, inguva, kayam, and ting
Asafetida odour and flavour become much milder and much less pungent upon heating in oil or ghee. Sometimes, it is fried along with sautéed onion and garlic. It is sometimes used to harmonize sweet, sour, salty, and spicy components in food. The spice is added to the food at the time of tempering. Sometimes dried and ground asafoetida (in very small quantities) can be mixed with salt and eaten with raw salad
Many commercial preparations of asafoetida use the resin ground up and mixed with a larger volume of other neutral ingredients, such as gum arabic, wheat flour, rice flour and turmeric. The mixture is sold in sealed plastic containers with a hole that allows direct dusting of the powder.
Asafoetida is extensively used for flavouring curries, sauces, and pickles.
It has a prominent place in traditional medicine; thanks to its carminative properties. Considering its therapeutic and curative powers, asafoetida is also referred to as the Food of the Gods and a few more, such names are an attribute to its never-ending health and beauty benefits it offers upon consumption.

It is not as advertised. I am from India and our food is not complete without Asafoetida and this is not pure Asafoetida at all. This is very light product, pure Asafoetida requires only a pinch to any food, but this product you need to add too much and still you don’t feel the taste of Asafoetida. I don’t recommend this brand. People spend hard earned money for good products.

Got fooled when I read the ingredients as just asofoetida and nothing mixed. It's not at all pure, it's waste of your money. Amazon should not allow sellers like this, who falsely claim. You can't even get your money back

I ordered it thinking it was organic as the picture on amazon showed that however the packet I got didn’t say organic anywhere. So not sure why I paid extra price for it. I didn’t notice until I opened and stated using it so can’t return it. Also, normally the asofoerida powder is much smoother but this was coarse.

Do not recommend buying. This is a terrible product. I use Hing in every thing Indian cuisine, and this product adds nothing to it. In desperation due to this pandemic I had decided to order this product(stores were out of the one I use). It was so terrible and ineffective that I actually decided to return it and wasn’t able to due to new COVID rules. Money spent down the drain along with the product. Useless product please do not waste your money.

The product I received has no certified organic seal like the one pictured on Amazon. The product is not returnable. The product clearly has been adulterated with a filler (allergen), not 100% asafoetida as package & Amazon states.
Amazon needs to ban Naturevibe for false advertising.

Boy does this spice stink before it’s cooked! But a pinch to 1/4 tsp. in a dish that’s cooked, really is delicious, with an almost leek-like flavor.
I love that this brand has no additives to it, (so many brands mix with wheat or other fillers) & you get your money’s worth, without having to worry about allergens for those you cook for!

I’ve been adding to my daals, curries & this green bean side dish:

In a pan heat the following spices in cooking oil or ghee, until the mustard seeds start to crackle and pop (use what spices you have of these on hand...should still be good if you don’t have all of them):

-a tsp or so of mustard seeds
-a tsp or so of cumin powder or cumin seeds
-few pinches of ginger powder
-an Indian bay leaf*
- a tsp or so of ground coriander seed
- tsp of ground turmeric
- 1/4 tsp. of hing/asafoetida
- ground black pepper & salt to taste
- fresh pressed garlic is also delicious in this

Add a bag of frozen green beans, and cook till flavors have melded & green beans are soft. This is a great, easy side dish! Have fun!
