Why the low rating? Well, for starters out of the approximately 102 "spells" in the book, I only have use for about 20. This is due to several factors. Many of the "spells" in this book are not spells at all. For example, one of them is how to cast a circle, another is basically telling you that you should keep a grimoire or book of shadows, there are also "spells" for smudging, seeing past lives, mediating, and divination. There are also rituals/activities for at least 3 Pagan Sabbats. Don't get me wrong, this information is all good, but when I purchase a spell book I am looking for more spells.
Another annoyance was the use of sex magic so often. I don't have a personal problem with this, but I feel that it assumes that both partners are interested in magic....when that is not often the case. Other spells required a lover or another partner to perform them. Lastly many of the spells required some pricey ingredients. I do understand that some spells do cost more money than others, however, the bottom line is you really don't NEED any of these things to perform the spell. A newbie might think that they do from reading this text. Overall, these things were minor annoyances; however, I feel that with the lacking spell content of this spell book, there should have been more practical spells. That is just personal opinion though.
The book is not all bad. It does provide a nicely written introduction on magic and the levels of what the author refers to as "black magic". It also includes several appendices of color, astrological, tarot, day, herbal, numerological, stone, and planetary correspondences. It also includes an extensive list of suppliers of various magical items. However, I should also mention that these are both printed twice--once for each side of the book. Lastly, I am happy with the spells I can use from this book....but that does little to save it for me as I feel like I could have invested the money into a better spell book that would have yielded more - and hopefully better - spells and information.
Overall, I do not think I would recommend the book to anyone. I only give it two stars for its good organization and nice selection of information.
