This book is printed in a typeface that seems smaller than what I normally find in books. The "notes" section is printed in a typeface that is even smaller than the "main body" of text. I place that fault on the publisher and the primary reason why I gave 3 stars. The content is interesting and the authors keep the stories moving.

Good read but a bit uneven. Some early actions narrated in great detail, while other important actions (Crete for example) are rushed thru

Picture does not match what was shipped. I believe the picture is of the 1st edition, published in 2002. What I received was the 2nd edition, updated by the authors, that was published in 2011. Now I have 2 copies of the 2nd edition. Not worth the hassle to return it.

This review is of the first edition of this book, which I bought about 20 years ago, and which has ever since been a valued addition to my library.
It is an excellent, seemingly balanced, and detailed account of the War in the Mediterranean from the beginning in 1940 through the Armistice in 1943; there are also a couple of chapters covering historical preliminaries. The fact that the book is a collaboration between an American and an Italian author is definitely a plus, both in terms of objectivity, and also in terms of access to Italian source material.
The historical narrative is frequently punctuated by the authors’ analysis, often referencing and discussing alternative viewpoints. I found this approach to be useful, as it gives a reader additional food for thought. There are also technical discussions inserted in numerous places (e.g. Italian torpedoes), although I would have preferred these to have been concentrated in one place for reference.
The bibliography is extensive, and and includes a significant number of Italian-language sources, as well British, German, French, and American.
The physical quality of the first edition, published by Chatham in the UK, is quite good. The typeface used is of a modest size, though still legible, and on the positive side, this allows more material to be included in the book. I also found the tactical maps, though simple, to be of use in following battle descriptions.

This is a good book to read if you're interested in the details. It's technically a 'narrative' history, but read more like a dissertation. It's just not good story telling. As many other reviewers have noted, the font is very small with too many typos that should have been caught in editing. I challenge anyone to find a better book on this subject. Howeverm having said that, reading through this is a bit of a slog. Be careful what you wish for....

... their relationship with their German allies information not always easy to find
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on January 29, 2015Verified Purchase
This book is a much needed telling of the story from the Italian side a side that was far more capable than is often realised,it concentrates on the surface/air war and not so much on submarines that are well covered elsewhere although they do get more than a mention, it is fair to both sides no heroics or changing history the Authors point out the good and bad points of both, it is worth five stars just for the amount of information it gives about the Italian forces alone and their relationship with their German allies and interesting to me why their fall of shot was poor although this was not always apparent to those on the receiving end, this information is not always easy to find in English language books as the focus is mostly on the German armed forces,a hard fought and very close run campaign is described in a detailed but very readable way that leaves you in no doubt of what the personnel of both sides endured in what was never a sideshow.

I really enjoyed this book on the struggle for Naval dominance in the Mediterranean. The book is well written and draws on Italian as well as Allied sources. The only criticism I would have is it is a little short on the role of the submarine in the Med. The history of the war in this region has been overshadowed by works concentrating on the Atlantic and Pacific this book goes some way to redraw the balance.
