Before Lindsay Lord's supervision of the maintenance of the Pacific-based mosquito boats of all services, Army, Navy and Coast Guard, small boat planing hulls for pleasure, racing and rumrunning were designed and built more as an art form then a scientific study. He began a new study of naval architecture which studied planing hulls and how they perform on the high seas. My interest in the 63' air/sea rescue boat also known as crash boat designed by Dair Long who worked for the Miami Shipbuilding Corporation, formally Fogal Boat Yard, Inc., submitted PT boat number 1 and 2 for the plywood durby. Page 88 describes the lines of the 63 footer as the Navy's most successful planing hull with has practically straight deadrise, a very high chine forward and fairing into slight convexity. The buttock lines from midship arf are nearly parallel and the plane aspect ratio is about .32. "At planing speed the lift is unusually high and the marked deadrise all the way aft contributes to smart manueverability." These boats are a very close approach to the monohedron ideal. I have not come across another book like it and recommend it strongly to yacht and small boat designers.

A Critical Book for Fully Understanding PT and Air Rescue Boat Design and Development during World War 2

Lindsay Lord's leading pre-war MIT background in planing hull development combined with his wartime supervisory position within the US Navy (being responsible for the maintenance of the Pacific-based mosquito boats of all services), makes this book the single best definitive resource for a Naval Architectural and critical review of PT and Air-Rescue boat design, their strengths and weaknesses, and detailed test, maintenance and engineering results.

The reader with the current 70 years of historical "distance", will have direct access to a well documented and supportive argument for 63' Miami built crash boat as the most successful planing hull design, and the "Quadraconic" Huckins PT Boat as the only true "Seagoing" planing PT Boat during WW2. Lindsay Lord also provides the reader with a critical, and well documented insights into the weaknesses of the Scott-Paine, ELCO and Higgins PT Boats as well as many other WW2 rescue craft.

As the surf board design community has discovered, this book also has modern day commercial and military staying power and should be included as a required reference when undertaking a new planing hull project. Although "Seagoing" planing hulls are probably one of the most difficult high speed craft to design (and maintain), the Navy SEALS would have probably benefited by Lord's planing hull insights (and possibly have sustained fewer injuries) if they had considered this book when developing their Mark V Craft.
