The boxing is very plain but that's fine: I hope the money they saved on the fancy carton they put back into the unit. There is layer upon layer upon layer inside the box, in one giant column, each layer holding a different part to the vacuum. I suspect the makers wanted to discourage people returning the unit so they made it impossible to do so, seriously, I think you'd need a NASA degree to re-pack the unit the way it arrives. So I lay out all of the parts; they seem well made, attractive, and logical, within a minute I had it assembled. The first thing I notice upon power-up is that the unit handles strangely. It seems a tad top heavy like its going to topple over, the unit also swivels adding to the peculiar feel to the unit, a little hard on my wrists when operated in the standard vertical position. It has very nice lights that actually makes the dirt on the floor more visible. Compared to a Dyson, the unit runs more quiet, but it feels slightly less sturdy but not a problem. The dust cup, wand, and canister remove easily, and snap back into place with minimal effort- better than the Dyson. My biggest complaint is to why they did not go the extra mile and put small wheels on the canister, then it would truly be a hybrid (Vertical+Canister) vacuum cleaner. Without the wheels, I need to hold the canister and the wand, demand that I start and stop often to free-up a hand to move something. I like that there are more attachments standard than the Dyson and they are well designed and function perfectly. The power cable is long but easily gnarls. This model is a bit tedious to clean and maintain. There are various filters that need to be removed and rinsed. The brush assembly MUST be inspected often to keep tabs on hair build-up around the cylinder. Accessing the brush requires removing 9 screws, 7 of them being T-20 security screws which require a 3" bit-length to reach all, two small wheels have to be pried out to access 2 of the screws, 2-locks have to be rotated with a coin to release a panel to have access to one of the screws. Then you have to be careful of the wiring, the side panels which will fall out, and a 2-pin connector: its an operation! The big question: how well does it suck? Maybe there are better vacuums, but I have never used one that picks up dirt better than this particular model of Shark. Despite my harsh review the Shark glides easily over surfaces, the unit is laid out logically, quiet, and performs admirably.
Spend 15 minutes and read the instructions.
There are a number of widgets that I've not had the chance to try. One very useful tool is for getting under appliances, like refrigerator and stoves. The hard floor tool is another I've not yet tried, but it too looks as though it will do the job.
The "Lift-away" feature makes the unit very easily maneuvered for getting under beds, chairs, and other hard-to-reach places. the detachable wand is great for off-the-floor cleaning of things like shutters and blinds.
So far, I'm really happy with the purchase.
ADDITIONAL NOTE - September 2017:
The motorized floor nozzle has a plush strip that is probably effective when using the vacuum on bare floors. This strip became detached from the unit as I was vacuuming my wall-to-wall carpet, and then wrapped itself around the motorized brush. After several back-and-forth emails to SharkNinja, they've offered to replace the entire power nozzle (not normally covered under warranty?!?!?) for the cost of shipping only.
It took several emails and some photos from me for their support folks to acknowledge the issue. On my first attempt, they offered to sell me a new pet hair attachment, which wasn't the problem at all.
I still like the vacuum a lot--but this encounter with SharkNinja support has made me wary of purchasing another product from them. If they're not willing to cover the motorized cleaning head--the primary part of the vacuum that touches the floor, what would they cover?
UPDATE 25 September 2017
The plush strip that became detached from the motorized head isn't available separately. They can only replace the entire motorized head. They have given me a "One-time waiver" of the cost of this part (the vaccuum is only two months old), but required me to pay $20 shipping. I am still left wondering just what their 5-year warranty covers.
The photos show the plush strip that detached and wrapped itself around the brush, and the brush head with the channel that holds that strip.
All that said, I still like this vacuum.
