Product Description

Mayan Superfood

Known as the "Food of the Gods” by ancient South American cultures, raw cacao is cherished now in modern times as a healthy and delicious form of dark chocolate. Navitas Naturals Cacao Nibs are made from whole raw cacao beans crumbled into small ‘nib’ chunks. “Nature’s chocolate chips” have a pure dark chocolate flavor, and they’re a healthy source of antioxidants, vitamins, minerals, protein, and fiber. Enjoy them in recipes just as you would conventional chocolate chips or snack on them straight out of the bag.

Minerals, Antioxidants & Fiber

Raw cacao contains a naturally rich supply of antioxidants including flavonoids and polyphenols, and it’s an excellent source of dietary fiber. Cacao is also known to be one of the highest dietary sources of magnesium and it possesses many other essential minerals in significant quantities including iron. Navitas Naturals Cacao Nibs also contain 4 grams of protein per serving.

Organic, Gluten-Free, Non-GMO, Raw, and Kosher

Navitas Naturals cacao is sustainably harvested in the lush forests of Peru, where our partners carefully select the best cacao beans from local small-scale organic cacao farmers. Our cacao beans are delicately removed from the pulp of the pod-like fruit, are rinsed with purified water and partially fermented. The whole beans are peeled and gently crumbled to form small “nibs.” All processing of the cacao is at low temperatures to protect the flavor and nutrients. Product of Peru, packed in the USA.

About Navitas Naturals

The mission of Navitas Naturals is to provide the finest organic superfoods that increase energy and enhance health. Our products are certified organic, kosher, gluten-free, non-GMO, and raw. Harvested from around the world, Navitas Naturals superfoods are a diverse whole-food source of antioxidants, protein, essential fatty acids, minerals, vitamins, and other key nutrients. We use methods such as freeze-drying and low temperature processing to ensure maximum nutrition and flavor.

Culinary Suggestions for Cacao Nibs

Navitas Naturals Cacao Nibs are an incredibly versatile and convenient superfood. You can use them in a wide variety of recipes just as you would chocolate chips in baked goods, desserts and raw treats. Grab a handful of nibs for a delicious and nutritious snack, or sprinkle them onto cereal, trail mix, yogurt or ice cream.

Chocolate Dream Smoothie

Blend all ingredients except for the cacao nibs and ice until smooth. Add the nibs and ice and blend again until frosty. Cacao is both a stimulant and a nourishing food. Although it contains a small amount of caffeine and other stimulants including theobromine, it provides energy mostly via its potent antioxidants and nutrients that promote blood circulation and oxygenation. This recipe by chef Julie Morris yields 2 servings.

  • 2 Tbsp Navitas Naturals Cacao Powder
  • 2 Tbsp Navitas Naturals Maca Powder
  • 1 Tbsp Navitas Naturals Cacao Nibs
  • 1 1/2Cups Ice
  • 1/4 Cup Brazil Nuts
  • 3 large Medjool Dates (pits removed)
  • 2 Cups Almond Milk

I'm a certified chocoholic with a weight problem. I had heard that cacao nibs had all the health benefits of dark chocolate (way more, actually) without the sugar and junk food aspects. They are loaded with antioxidants and have those powerful endorphin releasing stimulants. They are also quite high in fiber (but also in saturated fats).

I got my big pile of Navitas Naturals nibs and dug right in. Well - these are a bit of an acquired taste; but once acquired, they really satisfy. Cacao nibs are broken pieces of raw whole cacao beans that have been fermented and dried (and that's it). They are brown, with a dark cocoa smell, and a seductive texture that's partly like a coffee bean (crunchy and hard), and partly like a piece of chocolate (buttery with a crisp and then melting fat). The flavor initially gives you a cocoa hit and then a winey fermented flavor that is hard to describe. The aftertaste is bitter like baking chocolate. Like a coffee bean, there's some fibrous grit with the aftertaste after the creamy fats have dissolved on your tongue. My first impressions was "phew - that's disgusting". The winey flavor was off-putting and the bitterness in the aftertaste was hard to take. That didn't prevent me from immediately having more, however - as the crisp rich creamy quality made me want more. After a few pinches (maybe 3/4s of a tablespoon) I was flying! I mean, these things are POTENT. They really are loaded with all those endorphin releasing stimulants - and man they wake you up and then make you feel loved. Over the next few days I kept a big baggie of these in my pack and ate them whenever I wanted a cup of coffee. The stimulant effect is totally as strong as coffee - and more.

A number of reviews have remarked that the bag smelled fermented or like vinegar when opened. I experienced the same thing, and being a first time consumer of cacao nibs, specifically this brand, I was concerned that I received a bad batch. Upon further research, I learned that fermentation is a necessary part of cacao processing, used to reduce astringency and develop the flavor we associate with chocolate. Fresh cacao seeds have no chocolatey flavor at all. So, much like my first real piece of Roquefort cheese, I learned that this can be surprising in smell and taste to those of us who have only ever had the overly processed derivatives. While it is possible that some really did receive a compromised product, I found no detectable rancidity or otherwise off flavors in mine. I do pour the nibs into a bowl so they breath a little and this helps to dissipate the fermented aroma when I am eating some plain.

This is an item you do not want to buy in quantity until you have a chance to sample first (like that case of vegetarian canned chili I once ordered.)

I enjoy the product and plan to incorporate into a trail-mix type bar for some extra flavor.

Hello Raw Cacao Lovers!

Here is the real truth about vitamin C (ascorbic acid) content in Raw Cacao:

Despite the trafficked reports circulating the internet, the honest truth remains: even when processed at low temperatures (i.e. "raw"), there is no vitamin C (ascorbic acid) present in cacao.

Recently, highly trafficked websites such as [...] and [...] have highlighted the misinformation of cacao's supposed vitamin C content. Included in these reports are claims that raw cacao is "extraordinarily high in vitamin C."

Back in 2004, our Navitas Naturals lab tests directly looked for vitamin C content in raw cacao, but came up negative. Despite these results, the current media blitz brought us back again for another round of lab testing of our best-selling raw cacao products (beans, nibs and powder) for vitamin C. This time, we used two different laboratories instead of one, and utilized three different analytical methods: High Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC), Capilary Electrophoresis (CE) with UV detection, and Titration.

Though all three methods have their place in the scientific community, Titration is the most commonly used method in the food industry when determining vitamin C (ascorbic acid) content. However, there is a critical detail within the Titration method many companies miss when testing raw cacao. The method of Titration is unable to differentiate the vitamin C (ascorbic acid) from the vitamin's analogs. The result is what is known as a "false positive."

This is why, at Navitas Naturals, we use HPLC when testing raw cacao's vitamin C content. The HPLC method looks directly for vitamin C (ascorbic acid), and not just the analogs.

I was pleasantly surprised with the taste of this product because of the bad reviews on it. I like bittersweet chocolate though so, maybe that's why. I also mix it with yogurt as it says on the bag. The "nibs" are more like crumbles however, that is inconsequential to me as I mix them. These have helped greatly with curbing my chocolate addiction and keeping me on track with my diet.
