PRODUCT CERTIFICATIONS (2)
Every time you choose Fairtrade, you're choosing a better future for people and planet. Through on-the-ground sustainable farming advice and securing better incomes, Fairtrade equips producers to tackle climate change challenges, such as extreme weather. All Fairtrade producers follow our ethical and environmental standards, which make environmental protection an integral part of farming. This includes reducing carbon footprints and pollution, finding organic alternatives, bans on deforestation and protecting biodiversity.
USDA Organic products must be produced using farming practices that maintain and improve soil and water quality, minimize the use of synthetic materials, conserve biodiversity, and avoid genetic engineering, among other factors. Crops can be certified organic if they’re grown without prohibited substances such as most synthetic fertilizers and pesticides for three years prior to harvest. Products that contain a minimum of 95 percent organic ingredients and use the USDA Organic seal are part of Climate Pledge Friendly.

Product Description
Navitas Organics Cacao Powder is made from naturally fermented and cold-pressed organic, Fair Trade cacao beans—rich in nutrients and flavor! Treasured as the "Food of the Gods" during the Mayan Empire, Cacao is one of nature's most powerful and nutritionally complex superfoods—providing an abundance of antioxidants (flavanols), minerals, vitamins, and fiber. Navitas Organics Cacao Powder is made from a rare, non-hybridized species of cacao (the "Criollo" variety), which we source from small family farms in its native Peru. A healthy alternative to conventional, over-processed "cocoa" powder, Navitas Organics Cacao Powder is easily substituted 1:1 in baking recipes, hot chocolate, desserts and smoothies. Contains no fillers or added ingredients. USDA Organic, non-GMO, Kosher, vegan and gluten-free.

"According to Consumer Lab, the upper limit for cadmium is 0.3 mcg/gram (0.3 ppm). Navitas Naturals Cacao Powder contains 0.95 mcg/gram (0.95 ppm) which is over 3 times the upper limit. "Cadmium is a probable carcinogen, can be toxic to kidneys, can cause softening of bones, and may affect fetal development" according to CL. The effects are weight dependent so children will be impacted more."
Do your own research on this brand, however Cacao in general is very healthy and easily used for cooking. It should be a go to product.
Also, other products of Cacao being reviewed, including the top seller, have consumer complaints of how bad the smell of the product is. Using your nose is commonly a good indication of taste (something like 90% of taste comes from our nose... I forgot what the percentage really is). It is not always an accurate indication, but it can be mostly reliable. This stuff smells good and when I smell it, I can't wait to have my shake! :-)
The Consumer Lab report from 2014 is outdated. Reviewers are saying that the company is not coming forward with the fact it has cadmium in it. Well, I found it suspect that Amazon would go on selling it when the product exceeds FDA levels of cadmium in foods. I too began to research it, but my focus was on, how are they getting away with being caught to have too much cadmium and yet are still be sold? The answer is, they are clearly addressing the cadmium levels. They have heard your complaints, explain what the issue is, and how they have been lowering the cadmium levels. You should go read it for yourselves to see if it their efforts satisfies you. The only thing I am concerned about is that they are self-policing. It would be great if they regularly sent product samples out to a 3rd party testing company to get an assay back that reveals the cadmium levels. That kind of self-policing is not unusual and is used as a tool for them to make sure their processing is not taking up too much cadmium.
It is also not unusual for competing companies to take their competition's product to a lab and get an assay. They did this with a toxicity in a baby formula and I love that it is being checked over and over again by both sides. In fact, the company that had the toxicity has made it a huge campaign to assure only the highest quality formula is in their products.
That's why I am saying, just don't rely on an assay from Consumer Labs. Keep up with what's going on and realize that although your phone call or email is not being returned, they did hear the outcry and are doing something about it. Go to the Navitas Naturals site and look for this page: prop65_cacao.html (or find that page by googling for: cadmium navitas cacao powder) and decide for yourselves if this is good enough action for you. Everyone is different.
I dropped my review to 4 stars only because I'd like to see assays being posted on their web site or something to that effect to assure their customers that they are serious about continual follow up to address this issue.
Finally, cacao is not a different spelling for cocoa. They are absolutely 2 different things. Many reviews are confusing the 2 as being one in the same and not just with this product's review. I found the confusion in reviews for almost all of Amazon's cacao Powder offerings.
I hope this helps!
I must admit not one of my favorite things to taste
I have tried it on cereal and in smoothies prefer the smoothies
I have more energy and brings a feeling of well being
For those of you unfamiliar about Cacao
Cacao is the purest form of chocolate you can consume, which means it is raw and much less processed than cocoa powder or chocolate bars. Cacao is thought to be the highest source of antioxidants of all foods and the highest source of magnesium of all foods. It has been used throughout many cultures for years for health purposes and even used as a high trade commodity.
Cacao powder contains more fiber and calories than cocoa powder since more of the nutrients from the whole bean are still intact. Cacao is an excellent source of monounsaturated fats, cholesterol-free saturated fats, vitamins, minerals, fiber, natural carbohydrates, and protein that make it an excellent source of nutrients.
