John Graden’s book, Near Death Experiences: Doctors and Scientists Go On The Record About God, Heaven, and the Afterlife is a fascinating compilation of stories of ten distinguished men and women, from Dr. Carl Jung to Dr. Eben Alexander, who share amazing accounts of their personal near death experiences. The commonalities of their stories are impressive, for until that moment in time, many were hard core scientists with “show me the proof” orientations fixed through training and mental set. Others were simply atheists or at best, agnostics. Then each is confronted with sudden death - some as a result of the onset of illness as Carl Jung’s heart attack and psychotherapist, Mary Jo Rappini’s cerebral aneurism. Others, like Dr. Anthony Escoria and George Rodonaia die as a result of outside forces, the former through an act of nature, the latter through violence. Each reports reluctantly returning to Earth to complete unfinished business and details their experiences while on the other side. Each in some way shared commonalities in their their experiences: feeling stripped of body and possessions, floating in light filled air, often surrounded by radiant spirits, meeting deceased family members, now radiant and free from pain. Many went through a review of their prior lives, from birth to death, but without recrimination. They looked back on Earth without regret, and in fact had difficulty when made to return.

In this book, the author uses the terms mind, body, spirit and consciousness interchangeably, exemplifying the power of the super consciousness, a force he feels every great inventor and artist of any ilk taps into. I have always been a person to “follow my intuition” (or what we often refer to as our gut instincts).

Although I have read some of these stories before and own the books about them, there were other stories I had never heard of. All the experiences were life changing for the people involved, many of whom were atheists. Interestingly, all of them now believe in God. It's fascinating to read these experiences and learn from them. A thought provoking book!

I have experienced an OBE (out-of-body experience) firsthand and I'm always fascinated about other's thoughts and involvements. Although this book deals with NDEs, the OBE, is similar in content. Luckily I was not near death when mine occurred (or so I believe). All this to say, John Graden has brought together various stories that certainly provoke thought. As this subject intrigues me, I'm already familiar with some of the anecdotes he has included in this book, but the reiteration and reading of new references helps to ground my beliefs. Yes, this is real. Yes, it is divine. Yes, it has transformed parts of my life. Society speaks of Science and the Spiritual as if they are separate and apart, when in fact, they come from the same source - that is, if you believe in God, a higher power, etc.; in that case, why wouldn't they? Mr. Graden makes it a point to say this is not about religion. I understand this perfectly. There is a difference, and it makes all the difference. His introduction sets this book up well. A personal quote from his last chapter reverberates," I believe there is far more going on in our dimension than we can ever hope to grasp or imagine in this earthly existence." Can I get a witness?

This book was very interesting as it told different stories about Near Death Experiences. Although the scenes and stories were different, they were all the same in that during their Near Death Experience they all felt the same thing which was total love.
If you believe what these people have experienced, it may end your fear of death and instead you may look forward in the future to join God and your family , friends and pets to a life without end.

I like this book it because it cuts to the chase and stays focused on Near Death Experiences and their aftermath. The people interviewed were doctors and scientists, the least likely people to believe in an afterlife, God or Jesus Christ. Some did not believe in God prior to their NDE, but became Christians or ministers after the experience. Also, many of the NDErs become depressed once brought back to life because life on the other side was so amazing and wonderful. Reading this book can erase any fears of death and dying.

If you are interested in a fast overview of some well-known, published NDEs by health professionals, this book serves that purpose adequately, and even convinced me to buy a book I had previously been hesitant to purchase.
However, the writing is at times awkward, or even distracting, and could have used a lot more editing than what it apparently received. I don't mind reading material that isn't up to professional standards, but I would have preferred knowing it was that way before purchasing it.

I read a lot of near-death experience books so I'd read one of the stories in this book before. However there was some information I'd never heard before so it was worth a read. This book asks some important questions and answers them too. Like have you ever considered whether consciousness needs a brain to exist?

In this book you will read about many people who left their bodies and didn't need their brains to think or move around in a spiritual body. The author points out that we are not biological robots we are actually spiritual beings having an earthly experience. And for those who don't believe you can have a near-death experience he asks: "Have you ever been in love? Prove it."

We may not totally be able to scientifically prove that near-death experiences happen but that doesn't make them any less fascinating. Two things this book also talks about did however not seem right to me. One idea is that all religions lead to God and that God has no religion. Jesus definitely set up a church so I think God is involved. And Jesus said he was the only way to God. Of course you can believe whatever you want but I just thought I'd point out those two things.

I did like the story in this book about a library in heaven. That sounded amazing. This book did however have negative and positive experiences. That indicates that there is a heaven and a hell. One atheist ends up in a place that causes him terror. Some people who were not religious ended up in a heavenly place or where shown both heaven and hell with Jesus as a guide. Well anyone who has read the Bible will be able to judge these stories for themselves.

I'm glad I read this book and I found it highly entertaining and intellectually fulfilling. Most of the stories seemed very true and real and sounded similar to stories I've read in other books.
