Tiel Desai is a talented musician who also works with special needs children. She's of greek ethnicity with black hair and hazel eyes. She's perky, quirky, hyper and fidgety, and happy-go-lucky. She's genuine and friendly; harboring many trust and abandonment issues.
Most women are not impervious to Sam Walshs' charms. His smile, his eyes, his Irish charisma --- his whole package gets him what he wants whenever he wants. Women....he loves and uses women for his pleasure; then discards them without knowing their names. He's a first class, grade-A man-whore and he's proud of it. He hides behind his reputation...covering for his low self-esteem. He never dates...never kisses...never undresses...doesn't touch or allow his bare skin to be touched...doesn't LIKE to be touched. He's a germophobic OCD guy who has many health issues. He tries to overcome all of his faults and short-comings and health issues, and OCD compulsions and quirks with intimidation and intellect and charm. But then for the first time in his life, he meets a woman who is unmoved by him. She doesn't fall at his feet or try to get his attention(s)...and it challenges him. It intrigues him.
What a fabulous story this turned out to be. Told in a dual POV, these two people who meet through a near death experience....who are very different but have so much in common. Their friendship progresses to drunken revelry where they end up platonically cuddling all night. And Sam begins to change. Since he's met Tiel, he's changing and this bothers him because he's unable to categorize or decipher it. And being the type of obsessive compulsive person he is, he HAS to assign and name and put some order to it all. He stops his whoring and that alone confuses him. But he loses interest in anyone but Tiel. He places Tiel into a friend-zone yet constantly tries to make it more than friends. He backs himself into a corner when he friend-zones her. Tiel makes him desire more from a woman....she utterly confounds him. He doesn't wanna do anything that will jeopardize this new, precious, once-in-a-lifetime, friendship. And slowly he has a revelation...he begins to realize he has real affection for her and this flabbergasts him.
Overall, this story touched me in ways I didn't expect. It made me sit up and take more notice of the progression of the growing relationship between Tiel and Sam. I liked that their friendship and attraction developed in a real way. Not rushed or contrived... and if you like a slow moving, genuine romance that doesn't take place or build around sex only...you'll really like this book. It's about real people with real problems. Brilliantly told.
