That being said, the sound quality isn't going to blow you away but for $10 i was surprised at how good everything sounded compared to some other headphones I've bought at $15 and even $20. The titular bass is strong enough as to be enjoyable and not feel lacking, but don't expect the headphones to start vibrating with some sensational deep tones. It performs well and certainly isn't bottom barrel.
As these are behind the neck and on ear headphones rather than Over the Ear or otherwise, there is certainly higher noise bleeding than with a comparable pair of over-ear headphones [though my PMX 95 have a similar problem so i'd guess it's simply what you get with Behind the Neck].
This hasn't led to any problems for me but I mainly use them at the gym where there are plenty of louder noises to cover whatever bleeding occurs.
Build:
And speaking of the gym, it seems to me that these headphones were *made* to be used in the gym. The Behind the Ear style prevents the headphones from coming off mid jog, run, or weight-lifting session. I do sprints fairly often and these haven't had any issues coming off unlike with other styles. A little note, I couldn't very well see it online but the headphones have a nice reflective patch on the back that looks fine enough and appears to be quite reflective should you be running at night.
They're ruggedly built and seem able to take more than a little pressure without breaking. A surprise for me was that the Earphones in particular are locked in place: in the PMX 95 the earphones were able to be slightly moved up and down, and this added alot to the comfort i felt wearing those.
Now these aren't uncomfortable per se but the neck band is slightly tight on me [this seems to be an intentional design in order to keep the headphones from flying off so it's understandable] and the rigidity of the earphones leaves a little something to be desired as far as long term comfort. However I haven't had comfort issues during my bouts at the gym except perhaps slightly sore ears by the end of a 2.5 hour session of wearing them non stop, so these are best used in spurts but that's what i bought them for so no issues.
I also want to highlight the cord really quick. Not only is it covered in some sort of non-tangle or stick deal, but at the top there's a nice little catch to prevent unnecessary pulling on the end of the cord. A piece of elastic hangs taut as the cord has slack. As the cord is pulled to semi-tautness, the elastic extends and becomes fully stretched just as the top of the cord reaches semi-tautness, ensuring that should there be any tugging, the tension will go through the elastic cord rather than the fragile wires where the cord connects to the ear. It's nothing too fancy, but it extends the headphones longevity and is worth noting as a mark of character for the Philips brand, that it isn't simply made to be sold but has a few minor design details to make it last well and long.
Side note, if I had to choose a pair to wear for leisurely listening, I probably would choose over or On the ear headphones such as my Sony MDRx 300 [about $20, maybe less] or my recently bought Skullcandy Over the Ear Hesh 2 headphones, but that's just me.
Overall, these do a solid job. They aren't the most comfortable or the best sounding, but they do respectively well. Their rugged build makes them ideal for use at the gym, as do a few design choices with the reflective back, non stick Cord and elastic cord to prevent unnecessary pulls from wearing the headphones down. Should these break in a few years, as I feel confident that nothing short of intentional abuse or concerted effort [the weight of someone stepping on these the right way might do the trick] would break these, but i feel I'd just as soon get them again for their overall value.
I use the headphones mostly for listening to spoken audio, but they're as good for music as many of my more expensive headphones have been. (Earth-shaking bass is not one of my enthusiasms -- look elsewhere for comment on how loud you can get the bass on these.) The vents keep the sound good even when I fall asleep on an earpiece, and there's plenty of volume for anything recorded with normal volume. I can hear an audiobook perfectly well even when I'm scrubbing dishes or grinding flour with the volume well below the iPod Classic max.
The structural design seems all but perfect.
The earpiece padding is made from dense foam and permanently set into the earpiece. The foam is more comfortable than the light foam on other low-priced headphones, and it shows no wear at all after 3 years and hundreds of hours of hard use.
Other headphones I've used failed at a connecting point, from bending and yanking of the cords. Until I got these, I figured on about six months for a pair of everyday headphones. This cord has several design features which help prevent the wires breaking: it has a braided cover which greatly strengthens it and lessens kinks, and it's tethered to the earpiece by an elastic cord that won't let the live cord pull loose or break from being kinked at the earpiece.
The cord is long, long enough to carry the iPod in a pants pocket and then some -- the excess needs to be wadded into the pocket when moving among obstacles such as door handles and garden bushes. It's also long enough that I hardly ever bounce the iPod off the floor by pulling it off a table or shelf by the headphone cord.
I do wish the jack was angled rather than straight, so that a sideways stress on the cord wouldn't put stress on the iPod socket or break off wires inside the cord -- another reason other headphones have failed. The Phillips jack has a rubber cover that extends onto the cord for about a half inch and keeps it from making an immediate right angle to the jack, but it's still pretty stiff. I added a couple inches of self-fusing silicone tape to ease the bending. Amazon sells tape that seems much like mine as "Rescue Tape" ( Rescue Tape RP2561 1 x 12' MCLF Fusing Silicone Repair Tape - Blue (1 Each) ).
The 2009 headphones' neckband has opened out a bit -- I'm not sure if this is a design change or just from hundreds of hours of hard use. On my 7 3/4 hat size head, the new headphones are comfortably snug but don't hurt my ears (even when I'm wearing glasses or sunglasses) or give me a headache from being tight. Your mileage may vary... Even the loosened up old headphones stay on through anything I ever do, so it should be OK if the new ones widen out a bit.
I'm so glad that someone at Phillips was clever enough to realize that it was worth keeping a sturdy, well-designed, economical rather than discontinuing them in favor of glitz and garbage models!
