Editorial Reviews

Review

"I liked Nectar for the God even more than I did Shadow of a Dead God. The mystery is just as intriguing, the pacing remains brisk and builds momentum, and the humor is still sharp." - Kevin's Corner

"The pace doesn't diminish the characters or its world building. It is a real skill to maintain such a balance and sustain it throughout the story but Samphire manages it exceptionally well.

"This is an engaging and exciting book with a central character you cheer on for his resilience." - Phil Parker's Speculative Faction

Patrick Samphire started writing when he was fourteen years old and thought it would be a good way of getting out of English lessons. It didn’t work, but he kept on writing anyway.

He has lived in Zambia, Guyana, Austria and England. He has been charged at by a buffalo and, once, when he sat on a camel, he cried. He was only a kid. Don’t make this weird.

Patrick has worked as a teacher, an editor and publisher of physics journals, a marketing minion, and a pen pusher (real job!). Now, when he’s not writing, he designs websites and book covers. He has a PhD in theoretical physics, which means that all the unlikely science in his books is actually true. Well, most of it. Well, some of it. Maybe.

Patrick now lives in Wales, U.K. with his wife, the awesome writer Stephanie Burgis, their two sons, and their cat, Pebbles. Right now, in Wales, it is almost certainly raining.

He has published almost twenty short stories and novellas in magazines and anthologies, including Realms of Fantasy, Interzone, Strange Horizons, and The Year’s Best Fantasy, as well as one fantasy novel for adults, SHADOW OF A DEAD GOD, and two novels for children, SECRETS OF THE DRAGON TOMB and THE EMPEROR OF MARS.

5.0 out of 5 stars Absolutely loved it
By Zack Argyle on December 19, 2021
“Oh yeah, and there was all the weird magical, supernatural *crap* swirling around this like a whirlpool of turds trying to suck me down.”

A whirlpool of turds, people. A WHIRLPOOL OF TURDS. Samphire is a metaphorical genius.

These books just feel good. I don’t know what it is—the writing, the humor, the characters—but every time I picked up this book to read, it felt like I was settling into a leather couch to watch the next episode of my favorite fantasy crime thriller. There’s not much else to say than I really just loved everything about it.

One aspect I particularly enjoyed in this sequel was seeing Mennik Thorn address some of his childhood trauma. With such a snarky narrator, this gave him a level of depth that I found quite compelling. I felt more connected with him in this book than I did in the previous, from his relationships with family and friends to his awkward budding romance with the Ash Guard captain.

I also have to mention that this book made me happy even before I started reading. In my opinion, too many sequels feel the need to be bigger, grander, and…longer. I swear every fantasy sequel adds another 200 pages in length to the previous book, but not Mennik Thorn! This book was 100 pages SHORTER! Hallelujah. And at 358 pages, this book was exactly the right length.

To end, I absolutely loved this book. I’ll read every future book in this series, because it’s just so damn fun.
