Kunzang Pelden (sometimes known as Khenpo Kunpel) was born in Tibet in 1862. Renowned for his spiritual realization, he was one of the great monk-scholars of the nonsectarian movement and was instrumental in the preservation of the oral traditions and teachings of the Nyingma school.

Indeed this work is a detailed commentary on Shantideva's Way of the Bodhisattva, no more no less. As explained by its author Khenpo Kunzang Peldenin in the text's colophon, this work is the compilation of extensive notes taken during a six-month course by the author. The course focused on an ancient Indian Buddhist text called "Way of the Bodhisattva" taught by Patrul Rinpoche at Dzogchen Monastery located in Eastern Tibet at the end of the 19th-century. 'The Nectar of Manjushri's Speech' is an English translation of the original Tibetan work.

This work includes excerpts but not the full text of The 'Way of the Bodhisattva' (Bodhisattvacaryavatara), also known as 'An Entry into the Activities of Enlightenment' (Bodhicharyavatara), a relatively long poem, which details the process of enlightenment, beginning with the originating thought and continuing through to full Buddhahood. Originally written by Shantideva an 8th-century Indian Buddhist scholar and adherent of the Prasangika Madhyamaka philosophy at the ancient Nalanda University in Bihar, India. English translations of the Sanskrit and Tibetan versions can be found online, as well as in print.

There are so many mind-blowing and precious gems of sacred knowledge in this work that it deserves its place higher than almost any other text, wrapped in silk to keep defilements away. I have learned more about the realms of Samsara, meditation, the gift of Bodhicitta, and the blessed ways to pay homage to Awakened Ones than I ever thought possible, and there is indispensable knowledge about the proper ways to dedicate, work for sentient beings, and purify even the most vile sins. A perfect read for those drawn to the Heart of the Sacred Triple Gem.

Khenpo Kunpal's commentary is a valuable guide for practicing the Bodhicharyavatara. This is the explanation lineage of Patrul himself, so for anyone who identifies as Nyingma, the heart of the mahayana presentation of Shri Singha Shedra and Dzogchen monastery is placed in the palm of your hand.

The poetry of the Bodhicharyavatara is beautiful, and relatively easy to understand for such a comprehensive distillation of the sutrayana, but Shantideva's imagery and ideas are classically Indian, and as such can be opaque at times. Many of the Tibetans who studied his text were no more familiar with these elements than we are; for example, the ritual bathing described in the second chapter would be as confusing to a Khampa shepard as it was to me. If your goal is to not leave the words on the page, but to practice them correctly, a guide like this is indispensable.
