Product Description

Before setting off for The Wall, Jon Snow, Arya Stark's bastard half brother, gifted her a sword. After noticing Arya's enthusiasm for sword play Jon had Mikken, whose mark adorns the blade, create a sword specifically to suit Arya's physique. Lighter, thinner, and smaller than a typical Westeros blade, the style was closer to that of Braavos across the Narrow Sea, to be used for thusting and slashing, style of combat more suited to the quick and agile, rather than those with raw strength. Jon christened the sword Needle, in homage to Arya's least favorite hobby of needlework. After arriving in King's Landing, Arya's father, Eddard Stark, then the King's Hand, hired Syrio Forel, a Braavosi waterdancer, to teach Arya how to use her new blade. Syrio taught her that and more, preparing her for what was to come later. When Arya would return from practice sweaty and sore, and Septa Mordane would ask where she had been, Arya could truthfully say she had been doing "Needlework" all along. Sword Details Blade: ~24" (~30" overall) high carbon steel, full tang. Hilt: Cast metal with antique nickel plate. Genuine leather wrap. Plaque: Silkscreened fiber board. Includes mounting hardware.

This is a great sword but there are 2 important things to know.

1) This is the book version of needle. If you are wanting the HBO TV version that will be comming out in the fall.

2) This is a functional sword with 1045 steel and 85% tang. While this is a very good thing...it also means that you need to keep finger prints off the actual blade and either oil it every couple months or wax it once with rennsance wax. All real non stainless blades require this.

With that said the handle metal parts are nickle plated and can be touched and handled as expected. The sword is beautiful and just like it is described in the book. Come with a nice wall plaque to hang it on. When shipped only the tip is sharp but it can be fully sharpened allong the entire length using a wetstone. Of all the swords in my collection this is by far my favorite.

This is the first sword that I have purchased and I purchased it directly from Valyrian Steel. The sword is really nice. The raped grip is very cool and I really like the brushed nickel pommel and cross guard. The blade has a wolf head engraved on one side and a number of the count on the other (example: 1 of 2500). There is also the maker and all rights reserve etc. engraved as well. It is a bit spendy for what it is but it feels solid and really looks great. The wall display is a bit less then the purchase price would suggest, but my wife tolerates it.

Needle is extremely well made and very authentic. It hangs in a place of honor on the wall with the included "Winter is Coming" plaque. If anyone tries to break in I will "stick them with the pointy end" lol

I purchased an example of Needle from the original source, not Amazon. As stated in other reviews, this is the "book" Needle, not the HBO show Needle.

I really had no idea what to expect when I made the purchase. Would it be stage quality? Or worse?

It's terrific. Everything about it is high quality. George R. R. Martin gifted Maize Williams one of these and there are many pics of her with this "Needle" available online to verify that.

I guess that since this is a limited edition item, and sold out, some people have decided to corner the market and ask a lot more than it cost retail.

I don't blame them for that, They saw the potential market and took advantage. I've seen them advertised for up to $2,000.

I think I paid $200 from Valerian Steel.

I've heard that the HBO version of Needle will be available soon. You can count on me to be at the head of the line for that Needle.

For now, I have a really fine example of Needle, number 0177, and I'll be hanging onto it.

I was thinking this was a very beautiful sword online, but now as I hold it in my hand and have it proudly displayed on my wall, I'm very glad I got it. Rather expensive compared to what I have already and duller than I thought but it is made for display.

You know it was a book before it was a show? Right. This seems closer to the book. It's not a fencing sword but more of a rapier.
