I've identified a few modifications that will make it much easier for anyone to use.
1. Permanently attach it to an cheap phone case to prevent it from sliding off of the camera lense. This would result in it fitting only one phone.
2. Increase the size of the focusing knob. I did this by super gluing the cap of a water bottle to the top of the existing knob. I think is an essential modification as it makes focusing the microscope incredibly easy and reduces the tendency of the scope to slide off of the camera lense.
All-in-all, this is one of the cheapest and best I've purchases I've made towards my daughter's education.
A couple of things to know: The device has to be lined up exactly for a perfect edge to edge image but once you're there it's good to go. Depending on how you want to use it, rather than use the focus knob, you can just move the scope up or down a bit to get the focus just right. It takes a little practice and a tiny bit of patience but it's not that hard to do.
Before I close I just want to say I have all manner of phone lens attachments and some were so bad as to be unusable and ended up in the trash. Not this one. I like the quality of the images I can get and it is easy to use. You can decide for yourself, I took a picture of the fabric on my jeans sitting here on the couch. I could have taken more and gotten it a bit sharper on the focus but for a first try I think it's a good example of what to expect. Sample for fair review.
The biggest functional problem with this item is that the zoom and focus knobs are extremely tight. This is not intolerable if you are using the scope on it's own, but when it is attached the phone, the effort it takes to make adjustments will almost always have you realigning the scope with the phone camera. After about the 20th time I had to realign the phone despite my highest effort to make minor adjustments to the knobs patiently, I decided to put it back in the box and return it. No amount of practice was seemingly preventing this frustration. If you really want to use it on the phone, reconsider this purchase.
This microscope lens has a 60 to 100 times zoom. To attach it to your phone, there is a clamp that should fit most smart phones without any issues. The magnifying glass also has a bright LED light attached to it which allows for better viewing no matter the surrounding light conditions. The item is powered using three LR1130 batteries, and it comes with a nice leather case for storage.
I think this is a useful item for any inquisitive student to own. My nephew loves using his microscope lens to look at different leaves and bugs from the outside. It can also be used to inspect old coins, antiques, or even jewelry! I am pleased with my order. My nephew enjoys his new gadget very much.
