I own the Sony A6000, and the built in flash wasn't as powerful as I wanted. For under $100 I am amazed how good this flash is. It does everything I need it to normal environments. If I had to make an estimate, I'd say it's 4X more powerful than the built in flash. It's also very simple to adjust the flash strength.
1. Simple operation (I may be biased as I've used a more complex flash in the past)
2. Plenty powerful for a prosumer/enthusiast.
3. Compact. I downsized to A6000 because of size, this fits it well.
1. No instructions.
Bottom Line: Use this flash correctly, and you will love the pictures it helps you produce!
I saw one review where there were no instructions; FYI they are in the very bottom of the box with bag, and the stand. Me, I need instructions, and I couldn't find them online. The English is a little choppy, but understandable.
I still think it's a great flash for the money. And small and easy to pack in your carryon.
THIS FLASH [the SONY model] WORKS WITH: Sony RX100M2, HX400V, HX200. Others, I'm not sure.
And if you want a $80 flash to do what a $600 flash does, you aren't being realistic. This is a flash that will fill the gap for most amateurs who just need a little more than their camera can offer. This flash has several modes, but I don't have use for most of those.
This is the same model (apparently) as the Meike model. I did some research, and this model got some poor reviews about a year ago, so do your own research. The good thing about Amazon is that they handle returns well if it doesn't work for you.
This is probably the flash you want: IF 1) you want a TTL (through the lens) flash that "reads" your camera and provides the perfect flash amount and 2) you need some extra "oomph" in your flash. And 3) you don't want to have to "fool around" with a flash unit, you just want to take a picture, darn it.
I'm not a pro photographer, just an avid enthusiast. Speaking as such, you should know a point and shoot or even a bigger camera with an internal flash only gets about 10 feet, tops. Sometimes, you need more. This is a great addition to your camera case because it is easy to use.
Yes, you can get a cheaper model. But you have to set it manually and test it beforehand. This one connects to your camera, reads the settings, figures it all out, and gives you a flash. You can "dial it up or down" (brighter or not as bright) easily.
You can turn it, "bounce it" and it comes with a diffuser to soften the flash. It comes with a litle foot so you can use it off camera, and little pouch to carry it in.
I like the slim design. I recommend it. It goes with me wherever I take my RX100--it's smaller than a small women's hand. It takes two AA batteries.
The only issue with the flash is that the foot is a bit loose. This helps turn the unit around to help in bounce flash, which is another nice feature of the flash. Unfortunately, it needs to be stiffer. It's a pain to unloosen the hot shoe tightening collar as the foot will move long before the tightening collar does. The flash can also be knocked off it's axis too easily as well. I shudder to thing how this will age. The detents are too soft as it is, what happens as they give way to normal wear and tear? Still, for the price point it a good little unit. I hope the actual manufacturer adds a little more stiffness to that foot, and naturally raises the price. It's would still be priced far less than the Sony while giving more bang for the buck.
