Build / fit & finish: The first thing you'll notice is the plastic is somewhat flimsy, and the battery door tends to rattle. A lot. This is easily fixed with some foam tape or the like. The grip matches the d3100 finish quite well, though the grip material is of a lower quality. The light weight, even with batteries in it, is nice, but I'd rather it felt a bit more sturdy. I'm afraid of splitting the grip every time I attach it. The external cord for the vertical shutter release is a little annoying, but not a major issue, unless you shoot outdoors a lot where dirt and water will get into the ports.
Ease of use: Plug-and play functionality, in a sense, though you will have to remove the battery door (simply hold at a 30-degree angle and pull gently). The battery door stores neatly in a slot in the coupler. The included cable attaches easily and securely.
In a nutshell: If you need or really want a grip for your d3100 and don't want to wait, this is a perfectly fine piece at a great price. If you insist on great build quality, stay away.
1.)as far as build ... its strong, not as cheaply made as some reviewers have made it out to be.
2.)as far as fit ... it fits fantasticly, looks like it was made by Nikon for the D3100, not aftermarkety at all.
3.)as far as rattles and squeaks ... none what so ever , the battery door fits tight and locks positively, and the locking wheel snugs the grip to the camera body tightly, with no gaps.
4.)the battery door that you remove from your D3100 fits snugly in the slot provided on the verticle part of the grip.
5.)A pleasant surprise was finding two(2) of the USB cables that go from the grip to the camera in the package instead of just one(1)USB cable.
I took it out this morning to try it out and fell in love with it, I'm a big guy with big hands and this made the D3100 feel 100% better in my hand than it did before. Now I feel the camera is securely held by all of the fingers on my right hand, instead of just three(3) fingers of my right hand.(thumb, index and middle finger)I also noticed that my walk-around lens(55-300mm VR)felt way better balanced than it did before I put the grip on.
I would not hesitate to recommend the Professional Vertical Battery Grip Holder for Nikon D3100 to anyone with a D3100.
ITEM AS DESCRIBED:
As some of the previous reviewers have mentioned, the look and feel of the grip is not an exact match to the D3100. However, it is close
enough not to be a glaring mismatch. And while the plastic is a bit on the thin side, it is more than acceptable.
ARRIVED ON TIME:
My order arrived a day early and in excellent condition.
Nikon doesn't make a battery grip/holder for this model, so all your choices are third party. After reading all the reviews I could find, I
saw no reason to go with another model selling for more than twice as much.
While some buyers report that the battery door rattles, my seems to fit well and closes securely.
The short wire connector between the grip and the camera body does not get in the way noticeably and looks like it will last.
Since this is a somewhat small camera, the extra size adds a feeling of stability.
The grip is not a perfect fit to the body. Even when fully tightened against the body there is a slight gap on one side.
Hard to beat the price. (I paid around $20 including shipping.) I purchased this and two 3rd party replacement batteries for less than
the cost of one Nikon brand battery.
I would definitely recommend this to a friend.
