I had such a blast reading through "Negroni" and I got some killer cocktail recipes out of it too. I loved this book because it had a specific cocktail focus (the negroni obviously) and it provided detailed information on the history and lore behind the negroni, none of which I had previously known! It was full of detailed information on what ingredients to use and why you should use them. My favorite recipe from the book? The "Bitter French". It is a beautiful blend of grapefruit juice, champagne, gin, and campari. The citrus and the bubbly keeps the gin and campari perfectly toned down and helps emphasize the fruitiness of their flavors. The only minute issue that I had with Regan's book was that some of the ingredients were a little hard to find and a tiny bit specific. However I tested out a few other recipes using cheaper substitutes and they all turned out wonderfully. Additionally, the covers, photos and pages were gorgeous and impeccably laid out. It made for such an inspirational and enjoyable reading experience.

Before receiving this book, I honestly had no idea about the Negroni. Come to find out, the Negroni is one of the simplest and most exquisite drink formulas around. It is a combination of one part gin, one part sweet vermouth, and one part Campari, which is served over ice. The combination of bitter and sweet in loved by both men and women and is considered a bartender’s favorite. The Negroni was invented in Italy in 1919 and since its invention recipes for over 60 variations of the drink have been developed by bartenders.

This book is more than just recipes, it includes the history of the drink, background information, stories about bartenders, simple directions, and enticing photographs. If you are a drink enthusiast, this book might be for you. After buying the initial three elements (1:1:1), the variations are fairly simple with as little as one added ingredient.

"I've a passion for all things bitter- save for the odd ex-girlfriend."

Cocktail making is an elusive art, especially for a girl whose idea of drinking in college was Mike's Hard Lemonade and wine bottles with pictures of desserts.

in 2015, and it's time to adult.

Gary "Gaz" Regan, well known expert bartender, the Julia Child of booze, authors this little treat of a book, which outlines the history of the Negroni cocktail, along with an assortment of drink recipes. Equal part gin, vermouth (sweet), and Campari, this is a cocktail in a world of its own. I was glad to try a drink with an unexpected bite to it, similar to trying wasabi for the first time. Regan not only serves up multiple recipes, he explores the deep history of the Negroni's inception, and the impact it's made around the world.

I loved the alternative recipes, learning that if I ordered an Americano in a bar, instead of watered down espresso, I would get the classic Negroni, subbed with club soda instead of gin (pop! fizz! cilnk!).

I thought my favorite recipe would be the Bitter French, intended as a twist on the French 75 (sidenote: when did the French 75 become the new Cosmo?). The winner in my book was the Caricature Cocktail, a citrusy twist on the classic Negroni with Cointreau (subconsciously seeking my Cosmo, after all). Much to my taste buds' delight, both recipes include an unexpected complementary ingredient- grapefruit!

The little book packs a big punch. However (and I can speak from experience), it's light enough to carry to the local Binny's. I would recommend this title for folks looking to broaden their horizon of cocktails, and for that cocktail aficionado who always knows what to serve.

This is a wonderful book about not just the classic Negroni cocktail, but other cocktails made from Italian bitter liqueurs such as Campari, Fernet Branca and Cynar. The author gives you the historical background of the Negroni, probably over a hundred recipes for cocktails and lots of beautiful photos. We're in the golden age of cocktails and this book will show you how to prepare fun new drinks. Many of the drinks use Campari, which you can find at any liquor store. The book has inspired me to search my local liquor stores for the less well known liqueurs such as Cynar and Fernet Branca. Cheers!

This isn’t an all inclusive cocktail book – this focuses entirely on a specific cocktail. The Negroni. The detail on its origins, historical cocktail information (very cool) and specific ingredients to use in making variations of this drink is interesting to read. The photos are colorful and pop with detail.

I like Hendricks gin quite a bit and that was one reason I wanted to review this book. Being a boring ol’ gin-n-tonic drinker I thought I would enjoy a twist of flavor combinations. Most of the ingredients listed may be found in any liquor store but there are some hard to find ingredients. One type of bitters has an orange and cinnamon flavoring but I couldn’t find that locally. Sounds good though.

This is a well laid out book and would make a great addition to anyone’s bar, especially for people who collect cocktail books. Hardcover, quality paper and lovely photos are the bonus with this Negroni recipe book.
