When you require exact measuring, you reach for a caliper. But an accurate measurement is meaningless if you can't read it accurately. This caliper takes an essential tool into the 21st century with an extra-large LCD digital readout for exact internal and outside measurements accurate to .001-Inch. Instantly converts from SAE or Metric, the display can be zeroed at any point on the slide. Machine-grooved thumb-roll mechanism and position lock for sure adjustment. Hardened stainless steel shaft with depth-measurement probe, precision ground jaws. On-off switch with auto-off, two long-life batteries included (one spare).

I researched and shopped online for at least 3 months.
All my searches kept coming back to the Neiko 01407A.
I could afford it and couldn't wait to get it
I was extremely surprised and pleased with the craftsmanship and care that went into the manufacturing process for this tool.
I would put this caliper up against any of the high dollar ones.
Still making saw dust,
I did some research, and these were popular for having consistent readings and good construction. You want the measuring side of the device to be even and flush so you get the same measurement when using the outer and inner measuring surfaces. From my testing at home, that is the case with these calipers, with variation of no more than .02 mm. That's certainly good enough for our needs.
Look, you know if you need insane accuracy, and if you do, you have no business looking at sub-$100 calipers. But for the hobbyist, general contractor, or budding engineers, these will serve you well.
So why only four stars? The buttons on the device are the cheap rubber buttons that can get wedged and stuck if you push them at an angle. Not a big deal, and easy to fix, but still annoying. Other than that, no complaints.
If you have any questions, feel free to leave a comment. Cheers!
Is this a really good set of calipers at a very good value price? Yes.
I think it is all about realistic expectations for the money you spend on a particular item. Some have said that the calipers are off by .003 and I will admit that most sets I have seen that are in this price range are off by roughly that amount. The way I look at that is you have to understand that if you are working on a government project and are building pieces for the International Space Station please do not use these calipers to take measurements. If you are working on the other 98% of hobby work at home with a drink in your hand these are going to do the trick every time. (until you drop them and break the LCD screen)
For the professionals out there that demand accuracy and cannot tolerate .003 in their work piece I would recommend a set of calipers such as Mitutoyo ABSOLUTE 500-196-20 Digital Caliper, Stainless Steel, Battery Powered, Inch/Metric, 0-6" Range, +/-0.001" Accuracy, 0.0005" Resolution
Now I know what you are thinking "Those calipers are 7 times more expensive, what a ripoff" Well, in most cases you pay for what you get and in the world of machining you pay more for more accuracy so you cannot have your cake and eat it too. ;)
As for this Neiko set of calipers they feel nice in your hand, they smoothly operate without a hitch, and they have saved me a ton of time over trying to measure something manually. The Digital readout is clear and does a great job.
I knew when I bought them that they weren’t going to be super accurate calipers. And quite frankly I didn’t need a high level of accuracy so it didn’t matter. However, I DID NEED calipers that would turn on after more than a few uses. Unfortunately that is not what I have.
I purchased these calipers about eight months ago. Now, you might argue that was a while ago, maybe I used them multiple times a day for eight months and managed to wear them out? Wrong. I used these <12 times during those eight months. Today, when I went to measure something, I tried to turn them on and I got nothing. Not to worry, I thought, I just need to replace the battery! Wrong again. Fresh batteries did nothing. The unit is well and truly broken.
I tried to get into contact with the manufacturer “Neiko”. I realized there was no contact information, or even any documentation whatsoever, that came with the calipers. So I checked online. I searched around and came up empty handed. Lots and lots of websites that sell Neiko tools, but no Neiko website, and no way to contact the manufacturer. So I signed into Amazon to see if they could help me get ahold of the manufacturer. Well, according to Amazon, I am out of my return window (not surprising) and am out of my customer support window for this product as well.
So now I have a pair of broken calipers and no manufacturer or distributor to talk to about it. These were not expensive, but I do expect even my $20 products to last more than a couple uses over less than a year.
I don’t usually say this, but I highly recommend you do not buy this item. Things happen, and I don’t blame companies for the occasional faulty product, but I do blame companies for how they respond to instances of faulty products. This company seems to not even exist.
Save your money for something better.

-case holds caliper securely, no rattling. Has holder for battery when removed for long term storage.
-turns on when moved
-internal circuit board contacts are gold plated, buttons won't stop working after a year like some other calipers.
cleaning them out is fairly easy(see photos):
-remove back sticker
-unscrew 5 screws to remove reading unit(don't lose the two rubber wipers)
-unscrew and remove end stop
-slide caliper apart
-clean out cavity with soap/water/brush
-add a little bit of oil
This gets them moving smoothly. It would be nice if they did this at the factory. It would be a lot easier for them to do it than the customer.
(Nov 2018):Replaced the first battery(7 moths after purchase). Tested power consumption, which is around 10uA regardless of on/off state. Stock up on LR44s if you buy this. for long term storage remove the battery.
