Does NOT meet it's Accuracy Spec... Gap Between Internal Jaws

I compared the NEIKO 01407A to 6 other digital calipers in this Video RoundUp.
(Video Size and Quality was reduced to meet Amazons limits, Watch the full video on my YouTube GadgetClass channel)

The Neiko seems to get decent reviews, probably mainly because it is the cheapest one and soo many more people have bought it, but compared to all of the other calipers in the roundup it actually scored low across the entire data set. The build quality and accuracy is not all that great compared to the iGaging EZCAL. There is a gap between the internal measuring jaws which renders all internal measurements inaccurate.

Summary:
Spend $10 more and get the iGaging EZCal which was the best digital caliper in the $30 and under group.

Cons:
~ There is a gap between the internal measuring jaws which makes all internal measurements inaccurate. Watch my Youtube video showing this gap visually.
~ While the average accuracy across the entire data set put it within it's rated accuracy of .0015", it is NOT accurate when measuring at the end of the jaws, where it is off by as much as .003" (way out of spec)
~ There is a lot of "Slop" between the ruling body and measuring body of the caliper which is a big reason it does not meet spec.
~ Finish and build quality are lacking when compared side be side to the iGaging EZCal

Pros:
~ It is cheap?
~ Some have had success hacking a data output cable onto these

Great set of calipers for the hobbyist or someone not working on very high precision parts

Is this the best, most accurate set of calipers out there? No.
Is this a really good set of calipers at a very good value price? Yes.

I think it is all about realistic expectations for the money you spend on a particular item. Some have said that the calipers are off by .003 and I will admit that most sets I have seen that are in this price range are off by roughly that amount. The way I look at that is you have to understand that if you are working on a government project and are building pieces for the International Space Station please do not use these calipers to take measurements. If you are working on the other 98% of hobby work at home with a drink in your hand these are going to do the trick every time. (until you drop them and break the LCD screen)

For the professionals out there that demand accuracy and cannot tolerate .003 in their work piece I would recommend a set of calipers such as Mitutoyo ABSOLUTE 500-196-20 Digital Caliper, Stainless Steel, Battery Powered, Inch/Metric, 0-6" Range, +/-0.001" Accuracy, 0.0005" Resolution
Now I know what you are thinking "Those calipers are 7 times more expensive, what a ripoff" Well, in most cases you pay for what you get and in the world of machining you pay more for more accuracy so you cannot have your cake and eat it too. ;)

As for this Neiko set of calipers they feel nice in your hand, they smoothly operate without a hitch, and they have saved me a ton of time over trying to measure something manually. The Digital readout is clear and does a great job.

At first hey they were great but for $18 you get what you pay for. Not even 60 days in they go off scale. It ZEROS at .200 every time I slide the scale. I do ammo and 45 acp is .473 so when it says .675 I least know that I'm off by 2 thousandth but it's a pain. So I ordered the $49 IGaging and I'm happy so really I spent $69 ahh. Buddy used to SAY THIS.

DO IT RIGHT THE FIRST TIME and you won't be buying things 2x. Trying to be a CHEAP BA**ARD I get what I deserve.

No way I can rezero this to show this. It would be a -.200 only took about 5-10 slides back n forth and it zeros on .2

Accurate, Solid, and Affordable

Believe it or not, my wife wanted one of these to measure tumors and other foreign bodies in animals (she's a vet, not a serial killer). Since I'm the tool fanatic, she tasked me with finding her one without breaking the back. If you know anything about calipers you know they can get very, very expensive if you need lab- or industrial-grade measurements for extreme precision work. We don't.

I did some research, and these were popular for having consistent readings and good construction. You want the measuring side of the device to be even and flush so you get the same measurement when using the outer and inner measuring surfaces. From my testing at home, that is the case with these calipers, with variation of no more than .02 mm. That's certainly good enough for our needs.

Look, you know if you need insane accuracy, and if you do, you have no business looking at sub-$100 calipers. But for the hobbyist, general contractor, or budding engineers, these will serve you well.

So why only four stars? The buttons on the device are the cheap rubber buttons that can get wedged and stuck if you push them at an angle. Not a big deal, and easy to fix, but still annoying. Other than that, no complaints.
