This is the first volume of the Neil Young Archives series of box sets, produced by Neil Young himself. This series is the definitive, comprehensive, chronological survey of his entire body of work. Volume I covers the period from his earliest recordings with the Squires in Winnipeg, 1963, through to his classic 1972 album, Harvest and beyond, including studio and live tracks with the legendary Buffalo Springfield, Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young, and Neil Young with Crazy Horse. This CD edition contains 8 discs, each in its own custom sleeve, with a total of 116 tracks, all presented in HDCD quality sound, and featuring over 40 previously unreleased songs, versions, mixes, or rare tracks. The product I bought was the CD version of the Neil Young Archives Vol.1.

I am a dedicated Neil Young fan who had most of Neil Young's 1967-1979 albums prior to the aquisition of this product. I didn't have any of the live peformances fearured on the archives nor the Buffalo-Springfield Boxset before buying this box set. So, most of the material on this product was unfamiliar to me.

I enjoy this product very much.

The sound quality sounds good to me, but I am not an Audiophil, nor I have a High quality sound system.

The material is arranged in chronoligical order of the original recording date, which I find really nice because Neil Young was always evolving in his music, so you can notice his musical and lyrical evolution through the songs. In addition you can also feel through it the creativity in the massive number of songs he wrote and recorded in these period of time.
The material is also very varied: original recordings, outtakes, rarities, demos and full live shows all combined to give you the full picture of Neil Young's musical career during these period.

The booklet specifies each song with its personal, recording date and place of recording. also, there are credits and short description of the pictures accompanying the various discs.

There is also a poster, which gives you a chronological perspective of order of he recordings through different angles:
according to sessions/periods, according to years and according to official albums.

I didn't have trouble with format compatibility. I had it played on my car's CD player, my home CD player and my PC.
also, no damage was on the discs. the only thing was some paper cuts on some of the discs, probably from their accompanying cardboard sleeves. I just wiped all the discs once when i got the product and didn't have any trouble since.

Why did I bought the CD version and not the Blue-Ray, DVD or MP3 versions?
the resons for that are:
1. I have decided the CD quality (which is what I normally use) is enough for me, but I did want a qulity better than the MP3 version. in addition I do like the case with its design and acoompanying covers.
2. Price vs. what you get
3. Music is enough for me, for more information I use biography books of NY, so i didn't need the visual staff.
4. Thinking about the future: according to Neil Young, this is just the first one out of 4 or 5 volumes. So multiplying the cost of one volume with this numbers, you get a big difference in cost between the formats.

I am really glad I bought this product and enjoy it daily.

Let me begin by stating that I have been a casual fan of Neil Youngs for a long time. One of my favorite albums is Decade. As long as I've had it it still makes into the CD player regularly even though I have a ton of other music.

I think the other reviewers that complain about the musical content of this set are way off the mark. The entire track list was available for quite awhile on the internet. Yes 2 live CD's are included that were released in the past year. If you don't like that then don't buy it. Besides the individual discs are available for sale on Neil Youngs website.

My personal oppinion is that this is an incredible set. I don't have a huge Neil Young collection so a lot of the material is new to me. The two live albums are filled with a lot of Neil's interaction with the crowd. To me that makes them very special.

I feel that this set is well worth the price. It doesn't have all the extras of the DVD and Blueray versions but if your like me you look at that stuff once and then it stays in the box for the rest of eternity. Besides it's less than half the price. If you don't need to have the best audio quality available you should be more than happy with these CD's.

Neil didnt want to release the cd version i think it was a record company thing
the music is great and an over view of someones career is going to have alot of released material.
I will have a blu ray player before volume two comes out.
this was suppose to be a visual release and to get that u have to have the dvd or blue ray editions.
the set list was available before it was released so why is there so much bitching.
i had some issues with glue
Reprise replaced within a week
if u like neil you should love this if you dont then dont buy it

Neil bring on volume two will have bluray ready !

Like most of the reviewers here, I am disappointed. Even though I KNEW that the box contained the previously-released "Live at the Fillmore East 1970" and "Live at Massey Hall 1971", the remaining six CDs just do not contain enough new material to satisfy me. Why? Because sets like this are for the longtime hardcore fan--and we already own the previously released stuff! If an archival retrospective box set by a major artist comes out, it needs to have a wealth of unheard music ("The Beatles Anthology", anyone?). Less than half of the material in NY's Archives Vol. 1 has been unreleased. Sure, it's all great music and it sounds fantastic, but I already owned 60% of it. Too bad. Guess I'll sell my earlier copies of "Fillmore" and "Massey Hall" on ebay to recoup some of the cost of this set. And I wish Neil would release the "Journey Through the Past" DVD separately. I didn't spring for the DVD release version of this set (too expensive, and I *really* would have been angry with the content) and I don't listen to music on my DVD player because it's in the room with the TV... I listen to music in my office, in the car, etc. Alas...

Great un-released, not heard before songs from one of the songwriter masters.
Neil, I believe spent many hours selecting the tracks and running order for the set.
He's included great versions of many songs ... for example,
"Bad Fog Of Loneliness" & "Journey Through The Past" are masterpieces.
Many others & too many to mention.
Now looking forward to Volume 2. I hope we're not waiting too long.
A must have for every Neil Young fan.

mais pourquoi a sa sortie le coffret était si difficile à trouver en France
