There’s a refreshing innocence to this story. Esty’s developing relationship with Mark is all the more involving because she has so much to learn about life and about herself. Through Esty we experience her transition from a restrictive society to one where no one but Esty understands how momentous it is to wear a pair of jeans and shake a stranger’s hand for the first time.
The dialogue sometimes feels a little didactic and staged, but most of the time it rings true. No character or society is presented as totally good or totally bad. The author gives Esty and Mark and their families the space to learn and develop, describing a sense of comfort and security in the limitations of Esty’s old life and a brashness to the wealth of choice on offer in the new.
As a secular Jew brought up in the UK, I was particularly drawn to this story, but whether Jewish or not, religious or not, if you’re looking for a book with characters you’ll care about and a story that will make you think, I encourage you to pick up this novel.
