A Feast for the Mind (yes, it exists)

This is a wonderful collection of Prof Feser's articles which brings together in one volume, his best essays on neo-scholastic philosophy. The Aristotelian-Thomistic framework illuminates various subjects: mind-body problems, natural law and ethics. Feser writes in such an intelligable manner, that it is open to all interested readers, both academic and laymen. It was Feser's books and articles that cemented my own growing theism, and his essay on Natural Law, property rights and taxation, convinced me to abandon my previous strict libertarianism, for a view more in line with Catholic social doctrine. His refutation of atheism and defence of an immaterial mind is truly eye opening.

I can highly recommend this book to anyone who wishes to experience a real intellectual discourse.

Another Home Run!!

Another home run for Dr. Feser!! While reading his other books nagging questions would arise. For example, why does the existence of composite beings (act/potency) necessarily require a sustaining cause rather than just an initiating cause? Feser here and there in his other works would make reference to some essay that he had written to defend such positions. But in order to get at this material would require either subscribing to some philosophy journal or purchasing each piece of interest at a substantial price. Never mind the effort to locate the exact essay. So here we have Feser's most important essays on all those nagging questions that may come to a readers mind while reading his other books gathered together in one place. The essays themselves are lucid and speak well to the issues and to the critic of his positions. Now when I re-read Feser's other books (which amount to a veritable course in Scholastic Metaphysics and its implication--all worth reading more than once) and ponder objections to what he says, I can pull out this book and often find the objections I would raise as both anticipated and answered.

Buy it just for the PFA essay

Feser is THE premier defender of Catholicism and in particular, the Scholastic and Thomist tradition. He has written several books defending this his views, and they are all solid. The current book under review is a collection of his scholarly and popular published essays on various aspects of Scholasticism. In that sense, the book does not present a coherent defense of a single topic, but rather, several topics are defended in different essays. The essays have been partitioned into 4 topics: metaphysics and philosophy of nature, natural theology, philosophy of mind, and ethics. In the first two, he defends things like motion, teleology, and design contra ID theorists. These essays were fairly easy for me to understand. The three essays on philosophy of mind, however, are geared much more towards the academic and interacting very specifically with certain other philosophers. I have always been a little less interested in philosophy of mind and given that these essays were responding to something much more particular, I found them a little less helpful. That does not mean they were not well written or helpful; rather, it simply illustrates how there are a variety of levels of difficulty and detail contained in these essays.

This brings me to the last section of essays, Ethics, and in particular, to his last essay "In Defense of the Perverted Faculty Argument." I basically bought this book solely for the purpose of obtaining this essay, and I would recommend that others who are interested do the same. This 35 page essay is a full blown and thorough defense of the "perverted faculty" argument, which is not terribly fashionable today among not only secular academics but many of our fellow academic Catholics (e.g. Robert George, Christopher Tollefsen). Feser defines the perverted faculty argument (PFA) on page 398 as "When some faculty F is natural to a rational agent A and by nature exists for the sake of some end E..., then it is metaphysically impossible for it to be good for A to use F in a manner contrary to E." At this point in the essay, of course, he has defined the terms he uses in the definition. Feser goes on to address some common misconceptions about the PFA such as cutting your hair, chewing gum, and using earplugs. He makes the very careful distinction between using a faculty for a purpose different from its ends vs contrary to its ends. Feser addresses the other terrible misunderstanding about the use of the term "nature" or "natural." Of course, he also shows how the PFA implies the immorality of everyone's favorite pelvic issues In short, he addresses all of the standard "counterexamples" and misunderstandings of precisely what the PFA says and doesn't say.

An excellent collection of scholarly and popular essays defending traditional Catholic thought that was flourishing during humanity's intellectual high point. I highly recommend it.
