The NGE PLATINUM COLLECTION is a bare bones release with all the original story episodes re-mastered in both video and audio aspects. No extra video clips or commentary are on the discs. No artwork inserts are in the set. Each of the six discs are contained in a slim case illustrated with a story character and a guide for the episodes. The six cases fit into a sturdy slip cover box. The box is covered with a silver foil. The foil is embossed with the images of two characters in the series. It is as the image depicted on Amazon.
The originally released 26 episodes are contained on discs 1 - 5. The sixth disc has the Director's Cuts of Episodes 21 - 24. The description of these episodes are identically worded as on the Disc 5 Guide List. Disc 5 contains Episodes 25 and 26. Their descriptions are also in the Guide List.
As for the media product, the animation quality presents well in 16 X 9 widescreen. The audio options available are as described on Amazon. The discs menus indicate audio is in Dolby Digital. The audio quality of each episode is good. The English subtitle placement is good. Most of subtitles do not block action on screen. For the Subtitle lettering quality and size, it is easily read on screen.
I recommend watching the original NGE series in spoken Japanese with English subtitles. Though I'm not familiar with the language, the Japanese voice actors set a tone that sounds more suitable in presentation than what is set by the English voice actors. Additionally with the spoken Japanese and English subtitles option, some signs and posters in the episodes have their Japanese characters translated into English. These translations are bracketed in parentheses.
Though NGE has comedy which is mostly "fan service", the series is not for casual viewing. It is much more than a Mecha movie. It is a rather dismal story that is embellished with an abundance of symbolism, mythic and religious lore, theology, psychology and brutality. It is an existential work set in a post apocalyptic era. But the NGE saga didn't end at that. The ending of the original series through the last three episodes discouraged many fans. Two post series movies were made in an attempt of providing clarity/resolution for its conclusion. Love it or hate it, NGE is a dynamic work of anime.
