If you're familiar with Riff Raff (aka Jody Highroller), you know he's something of an enigma: a rapper born from the internet who manages to walk the thin line between hip-hop legitimacy and self-parody. Nobody really knows what his deal is which is a huge part of his charm. He's basically the Andrew W.K. Of hip-hop, trolling the world one song at a time, accumulating both haters and diehard fans along the way.

On Neon Icon, his best produced collection of music to date (his first album, The Golden Alien being borderline unlistenable), Riff's versatility is on full display. Here's a track-by-track analysis of what to expect...

Introducing the Icon - The album kicks off with arguably the best rap song of the year, complete with a spoken stoned surfer intro a la "Baby Got Back," an old school beat reminiscent of House of Pain's "Jump Around," and a whirlwind of his trademark stream of consciousness lyricism, including killer lines such as, "She was grabbing on my schlong doing handstands / hey Julia Stiles, save the last dance."

Kokayne - Riff channels Transplants in this surfy rap-rock ode to his drug of choice (and likely his powdered muse for the majority of this album).

Wetter Than Tsunami - With a more traditional trap beat, this is the first track on the album that sounds like vintage Riff Raff. Love it or hate it, this guy has come a long way.

Jody 3 Moons (skit) - This "skit" is really more like a strangely moralistic monologue coming at you from "The Moon" aka a cataclysmically stoned Jody Highroller.

Versace Python - His rhymes slow down a bit on this track so you can really appreciate his absurd rhymes and oddly melodic hook.

The white rap game version of quite literally everyone and everything has blessed us with his debut album "Neon Icon". Riff Raff is one of Rap's greatest mysteries, completely lacking the ability to rap yet somehow making a serious rap career out of it is nothing short of astonishing. Neon Icon is without the most ridiculous rap album of all time, and it might just be one of the most entertaining in recent memory.
So let's be honest, nobody actually knows how serious Riff Raff is about all of this stuff, for all we know he's a completely normal dude that puts on this mask and out comes this, but who knows. All we know is that whatever this is, it's incredible. We start out with some painfully delightful tracks. "Introducing The Icon" is just as good of an intro as you could get for an album this off the wall. But the real star of the album comes a few songs after the intro, "Kokayne". This song is so unbelievably off the walls, it's impossible to not laugh hysterically throughout. "Kokayne" is an ode to the drug that most likely influenced 99% of this album. The best way to describe this song is when you were younger and decided to play Guitar Hero or Dance Dance Revolution and that one day you decide to do the hardest level just because you can. You think you can do it, but then the second the song starts 50,000 notes come your way and you lose immediately. Yeah, that's "Kokayne" in a nutshell. The beat is so ridiculously off the walls that when you mix it with what might be the greatest rap verse in the history of music, it's impossible not to love. Check out these lyrics:
" The bellhop, breaking in the birdflock,
Oh $#!+ look who it is, the white Chris Rock!

I honestly was not expecting much from this release. I figured it would be thrown together but the presentation is awesome! I had listened to some Riff Raff before owning the album but wasn't quite sure what to expect. I was blown away by the nice gatefold cover and the sick sleeves. Now only if it was pressed on pink wax. Sound quality is excellent as well. This has become one of my guilty pleasure albums. His vocabulary might not be the greatest but his songs are catchy as hell. Gets at least a spin a week. Buy this album if you are thinking about it. You will not regret it.

This album inspired my first ever amazon review because it is that good and I wanted to share: this is seriously some of the most original and most thought out cohesive album I have listened to in a long time. I really feel like Riff Raff is hated on because he is WAY ahead of his time and people dont comprehend what he is really doing. He is making very original music that is fresh and does not fit in any box that people keep wanting to put him in....stop judging his looks and lingo and just enjoy the music for what it is.. Damn amazing album. Very impressed. I think Riff Raff is a geneous for pulling this album off especially because he makes his own beats.

Took a long time for this guy to grow on me, but it happened. He's not the deepest lyricist, and his accent is kinda funny. But he's got a style of his own, and he's an interesting character. There are some catchy tracks on this one for sure, including Kokayne, How to be the Man, and Time, and I like the way he's diversifying his style a bit.
