Running alongside that plotline, we have Ada, who was left high and dry after the crew of the Fairfax took her old ships core, leaving her ship with nothing. Her Captain blamed her, and she ended up in a spot of bother. Still on the hunt for her Father, she ends up in some creative storylines that actually make this a really interesting storyline as she weaves in and out of various character’s lives trying to just land on her feet. As with book 2, this is a brilliant subplot, but this time, Ada has along some even better friends with her that add extra fun to the story. Hers is still the best part of this book by far with the attitude, the banter and the trouble she gets into. It would make a good spin-off series.
Throughout the story we also have the main plot of the actual crew, Lucas, Caspar, Darren and the remainder of the crew as they seem to land themselves in ever increasing levels of trouble, all whilst trying to find the missing drug shipment, the missing ambassador, and at the same time, trying to avoid a war amongst all the different systems.
This is just a really fun story, I am not going to say it is the one of the best, I'm sure that there will be some criticism of the length and maybe some of the characters, but you have to take it for what it is. This is a plot driven story with some decent characters, with some hilarious dialogue that is very reminiscent of things like Firefly, with that constant banter and stoic characters.
One thing that was really amusing was the fact that the geeks of the galaxy all spend their off time playing a MMO game about the Solar System, with all the different elements, including all the gangs, the Earth, and the Alliance. It is so realistic, that they suddenly realise at one point that one of the bridge crew who is a huge fan of the game, knows more about what is going on than the intel people – kind of like the real world…
This is just what you need after a long day at work, something that is easy to sit down, and enjoy, without the stress, something light hearted, but still has a good storyline and good characters.
Well worth the read, looking forward to part 4.
