Shoots 11x64mm special foam plastic tipped bullet around 30 grains. A pseudo hollow-point (termed "suction cup" round is also available. Muzzle energy is estimated at 0.1250 ft/lbs. With its light stopping power, the weapon should generally be regarded as less than lethal (LTL). Game hunting was ineffective due to bullet drop, and penetration through ballistic gel was non-existent. Bullets did not deform on impact, and wound channels were not present. As for accuracy, groups were 31 inches at 7 yards and missed the paper at 25 yards.
The weapon's 18 round magazine capacity may exceed California regulations for firearms, but we have significant antidotal evidence of the weapon's proliferation in several less than gun friendly territories. This weapon can be owned and carried without a permit in nearly every jurisdiction around the world.
Some issues with the picatinny rail as it seemed to be undersized. Modifications were required to get third party sights and night vision to stay on. Keeping them zeroed was at first difficult until we realized the spread was due to other issues. We suspect the short (8-10") barrel does not provide a tight fit with the Nerf-proprietary ammunition. We have no word on whether the bore is rifled, and were were unable to obtain FMJ or hardcast lead rounds for our testing.
After rigorous testing, we found the weapon's greatest utility to be its close quarters cover fire capability. It was even possible to lob rounds over boundaries less than a block away, and we believe this would intimidate would-be assailants in an otherwise water-pistol fight.
We taped magazines one upside down to the other making it easier to carry twice the rounds in a firefight.
No instructions on how to load the batteries in the front (IT TAKES 4 C BATTERIES). You'll need some ingenuity and a screwdriver.
Oh yeah, and once you get the hang of pre-starting the motor -- the full auto is super fun! :)
If I had to do it over, I would get the style that you manually have to cock and not the battery powered gun.
Look at other options, before buying this one.
That being said still a cool toy. It would be nice when paying new prices to be notified that you may receive a older or refurbished unit.
