The fifth blaster to join the Rival line is as beautiful as its ancient namesake. Carrying 30 rounds in 3 parallel integrated magazines, it comes second in carrying capacity only to the behemoth Khaos (40 nominal capacity), but is barely an inch longer than the Apollo. Don't let the compact size fool you, this baby packs a punch just as awesome as its fellows, and is very easy to cock and load. Being hand-cocked rather than battery powered it is also much lighter to carry for extended play, and has two sling hooks, at the rear of the body and the corner of the rear handle. A sling mount was a noticeably missing feature on the heavy and slightly cumbersome Khaos, so Nerf have been listening.
The forward handle is the cocking mechanism, and can also be used for slam fire. There is a trigger lock (as usual), and an un-jamming button on the left of the body. In haven;t yet managed to jam it.
The mechanism is interesting but works very efficiently. There are four rotating barrels, and the balls are fed from the magazines in rotation into the barrels for single shots. The first time you push the magazine slide forward you push three balls into the top three barrels. The bottom barrel is the one that actually fires, and each time you cock or prime the blaster the barrels rotate to bring a new, full barrel to the bottom. The magazines empty from the right, middle, then left, so when reloading you want to refill the right tube first.
My one gripe is the loud 'pok pok pok' sound when firing.
Slam fires, and hasn't ever jammed on me, even though I've definitely fired at least 1000 rounds through it. Sometimes the pump mechanism will catch when you're trying to slam fire, but I think that's just me getting used to how far you have to pull it back and what not or maybe just new strong springs? Dunno, worth mentioning though.
Ammo area works terrific because it can't drop out of it, and it's pretty simple to load more in. You CANNOT Remove the ammo area like the previous rival guns, but as it holds 30 rounds, you really can't complain Too much about that (I actually think this is a bonus!)
Feels like it fires with about as much power as the rest of the rival series, though accuracy isn't quite as high as my spring fired apollo. Makes up for it in quantity and stability though I think!
It has a pretty lightweight feel to it, much lighter than I anticipated honestly, but it still feels sturdy, not at all fragile or wimpy. You feel cool with it, and there's something to be said for how much it makes my roommate run in fear for his ammo stores and cover when I bring this guy out of hiding.
